Lousada in brief: a newcomer's guide
The essentials of the Lousada municipality — where it is, what defines it, and what not to miss.
Lousada is a municipality in the district of Porto, at the heart of the Vale do Sousa in the Tâmega e Sousa region. It sits about 35 km from Porto — close enough to reach easily, far enough to keep its own pace.
The municipality in numbers
Home to around 45,000 residents across its parishes, Lousada blends a strong industrial tradition — chiefly textiles and clothing — with a rural life that’s still very present, shaped by vinho verde wine and dairy production.
Heritage and nature
The municipality is part of the Rota do Românico (Romanesque Route), which winds through the Sousa and Douro valleys. Alongside its historic heritage, Lousada invests heavily in nature through the BioLousada programme, with spaces like the Mata de Vilar woodland regularly hosting outdoor activities for families.
Vinho verde on the table
Lousada lies within the Vinho Verde Denomination of Origin. Local cuisine — from roast kid to oven-baked rice — calls for a cool glass of the region’s vinho verde.
