Discovering the Romanesque: a guide to the Route in Lousada
Six Romanesque monuments scattered across the municipality and an interpretation centre in the heart of town — a tour of Lousada's medieval heritage.
Lousada sits at the heart of the Rota do Românico (Romanesque Route), a cultural trail linking 58 monuments across the Sousa, Tâmega and Douro valleys. It’s one of the easiest — and cheapest — ways to get to know the region’s medieval history without leaving the municipality.
Where to start
The best starting point is the Centro de Interpretação do Românico (Romanesque Interpretation Centre) at Praça das Pocinhas, 107, in the town of Lousada. Its six themed rooms explain, in an accessible way, how the Romanesque style emerged and who built it. It’s open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am–6pm (closed Mondays and some public holidays). Admission is €3, or €4.50 for a guided visit by appointment. Phone: 255 810 706.
Lousada’s six monuments
Six monuments in the municipality belong to the Route: the Church of Santa Maria de Meinedo, with an inscription dated 1262 at its entrance; the Church of Salvador de Aveleda; the Tower of Vilar, a 13th-century fortified noble residence roughly 14 metres tall; and three medieval bridges — the Veiga Bridge, the Vilela Bridge (four arches over the Sousa river) and the Espindo Bridge.
Practical tips
Driving between the six monuments takes no more than 15 minutes each way. Some aren’t always open to the public, so it’s worth booking ahead — usually 24 hours’ notice, or 48 hours for Sunday visits. Always confirm opening times and bookings on the official site before you go.
