World Cup 2026: Ronaldo makes history while Croatia grind out a win
Portugal romped to a big win and Cristiano entered the record books as the first to score at six World Cups. Around him, England drew 0-0 and Croatia edged it.
Some days football reminds you why you drop everything to watch a match. Portugal swept Uzbekistan aside 5-0, and Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41, bagged a brace that puts him where no one else has been: the first player ever to score at six World Cups.
Roberto Martínez’s side, after a hard-fought 1-1 with DR Congo on opening day, will settle top spot in Group K against Colombia in Miami on 28 June.
Around the rest of the map
The day wasn’t only ours. England drew 0-0 with Ghana in a game best forgotten, and Croatia needed a Budimir goal to beat Panama 1-0. The eternal Luka Modric reached 200 caps, fourth all-time. Between records and dreary draws, the World Cup is warming up — and the best is still to come.
