World Cup 2026: Saturday of the giants (and the surprises nobody ordered)
Germany thrashed their opener and are back in action, the Netherlands face Sweden, and the African sides are biting. The tournament's barely begun and it's already loud.
If there’s a weekend to glue yourself to the couch, it’s this one. The World Cup has hit its tenth day, and Saturday’s bill is stacked with big names — led out by Germany.
Die Mannschaft arrived in form, hammering Curaçao 7-1 in their opener, and now they meet Côte d’Ivoire, who also started with a win — a late 1-0 over Ecuador. Two opening-day winners, then, scrapping for top spot in Group E.
In Group F, there’s a European classic dressed up as a group game: the Netherlands against Sweden. Graham Potter’s Swedes lead after steamrolling Tunisia, while the Dutch have only a draw with Japan to show so far. Ecuador-Curaçao and Japan-Tunisia round out the afternoon.
The takeaway
It’s early, but a pattern’s showing: the African sides came to fight — just ask DR Congo — and any favourite snoozing at the wheel will pay for it. Bigger World Cup, bigger surprises. And we’re here for it.
