A 48-team World Cup: how the new knockout round works (and who advances)
For the first time there's a round of 32. Top two from each group plus eight best third-placed teams. We explain it without the headache.
This is the first World Cup with 48 teams, and that brought a wrinkle that’s confusing half the planet: the knockouts start at the round of 32. Yes, you read that right — before the round of 16, there’s an extra round.
The rule for who advances is simple: the top two from each of the twelve groups go through, plus the eight best third-placed teams. Do the maths: 24 + 8 makes the 32. From there it’s the usual sudden death — lose and you’re packing your boots for the airport.
The dates and what’s next
The knockouts kick off on June 28, with the round of 32 running through July 4, and the winners moving on to the round of 16. For Portugal, the maths is still settling: their position and opponent hinge on the final group game. Translation: don’t miss the next whistle.
