Portugal in the Round of 16: the Colombia game decides who's next
Already through, the national team plays for top spot in Group K on the 27th. Winning could mean Canada; finishing second points to a far scarier name — Spain.
We already know the good news: Portugal are into the Round of 16. The 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan, with Ronaldo scoring and becoming the first player to find the net at six World Cups, took care of qualification. What’s left is where the team finishes Group K — and that changes everything that comes after.
The maths is simple. On the 27th, against Colombia, a win should lock up top spot. And top spot opens a friendlier path: the likely opponent would be the winner of Group B, currently Canada, the host still finding its feet at the highest level. In Vancouver on 7 July, that would be a demanding but tempting test.
The scenario to avoid
If Portugal draw or lose and slip to second, things get ugly sooner: the likeliest route leads to the winner of Group H, with Spain — the reigning European champions — as the big favourite. Nobody wants an Iberian clásico in the Round of 16.
That’s why the Colombia game, which looked like a formality, is anything but. It’s worth top spot, worth the path, and maybe worth dodging the neighbours earlier than you’d like. Mind the whistle.
