Portugal need a win: Uzbekistan is next
After a hard-fought draw with DR Congo, the national team play on 23 June with three points a must. What's at stake.
The opener didn’t go to script. Portugal started ahead against DR Congo — João Neves with a header right away — but were pegged back before the break, Wissa heading home the equaliser. It finished 1-1, with that nagging “we could’ve put this to bed earlier” feeling.
It’s not a crisis, but it’s no time to coast either. The group also has Uzbekistan and Colombia, and World Cup maths is simple: dropping points early gets expensive down the line.
The next step
On 23 June, Portugal face Uzbekistan, and there’s only one watchword: win. A victory leaves the team in control of its own fate before the Colombia game on the 28th. Another slip and the sums start to get nervous.
There’s plenty of quality in this squad to get the job done. What’s missing is what often decides these tournaments: switching on from minute one and not switching off before the whistle. Next Sunday we can do the maths — for now, it’s one win at a time.
