Portugal kick off Wednesday: Ronaldo's sixth World Cup and Diogo Jota's light
Two days to go. We carry a friend's memory on our wrists and the old dream in our heads. Here's how the national team arrives at the World Cup.
It’s nearly here. On Wednesday the 17th, Portugal take the field against DR Congo in Houston to begin another World Cup. And this one carries a different emotional weight.
Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41, will play his sixth World Cup — a record no man has reached — still chasing the trophy that’s always slipped away. Roberto Martínez has brought a group that’s anything but a one-man show: Bruno Fernandes conjuring in midfield, Rafael Leão, Pedro Neto, Francisco Conceição, Gonçalo Ramos and company. Nations League champions and ranked fifth in the world, they mean business.
A wristband with a name on it
There’s one detail that tightens the chest. The squad is wearing special wristbands in memory of Diogo Jota, who died last summer in a car crash, aged 28. Each band pairs a player’s name with Jota’s. “Diogo is our light,” said Martínez. A symbolic place in the group has been kept for him too.
The calendar reads DR Congo on the 17th, Uzbekistan on the 23rd and Colombia on the 27th. But more than dates, this team is playing for something bigger than itself. And in football, that tends to make all the difference.
