When is the São Bernardo fair?
From 20 to 24 August 2026. The date is not arbitrary — 20 August is the feast of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the town’s patron and the towering figure of the Cistercian order, which left Alcobaça the monastery that is still a World Heritage site.
Where does it take place?
In the town centre, between the Rossio and Cova da Onça. The fair moved back into the heart of Alcobaça in 2022 after years on the outskirts, and that is half the appeal: instead of a fenced site by a main road, you do it on foot, street by street, with the monastery as the backdrop.
What is there to do?
Trade and craft stalls, food, funfair rides, music and a programme of entertainment built for all ages. This year there is also an immersive installation devoted to Alcobaça’s chita, the printed cotton that is one of the region’s signature crafts. Come hungry: local cooking runs to frango na púcara, convent pastries and ginja, and the fair is exactly where all of it turns up at once.
What the fair is today came from a long way back. Across eight centuries the Cistercian monks introduced farming, culinary and industrial techniques that still underpin the local economy, and the fair grew out of that trading logic. The full programme is published by Alcobaça town council, and for more of the same month there is also Castro Marim’s Medieval Days at the end of August.
