Bragança's Festa da História runs 14-17 August and turns the castle medieval
The Festa da História takes place 14-17 August 2026 at Bragança Castle, with a medieval market, historical re-enactments and the official procession on 14 August at 21:30. The full programme is still to be published.
There is a programme, there are dates and there is a castle: Bragança’s Festa da História runs from 14 to 17 August 2026, in and around Bragança Castle, turning the citadel into a medieval town for four days. If you have a week off in August and have not decided where to point the car, Trás-os-Montes just got more interesting.
The heart of it is the medieval market in the central square, where craftspeople sell and barter what they make and where you drink and eat your way along the stalls. The re-enactment then spills into the Travessa dos Segredos and the Rua dos Larápios — the corner where fugitives from the authorities hide out and the poorer classes ambush passers-by with whatever they have planned.
What is there to do at the Festa da História?
The fixed point is the official procession, on 14 August at 21:30, from the historic centre up to the castle. This edition’s story turns on knights and a grand tournament announced by the lord of the castle — in the thirteenth century the alcaides of Bragança were nobles appointed by the king, and winning a tournament could earn a knight a well-born marriage and the fortune attached to it. The detailed four-day programme has not been published by the council yet, so it is worth checking before you set off.
When is the Festa da História and where is it held?
14 to 17 August, at Bragança Castle, at the highest point of the citadel. The festival is part of Bragança’s Grandes Eventos de Agosto, so the town has things running on several fronts all month. If you drive, there are underground car parks at Praça Camões and Avenida Sá Carneiro with 918 spaces between them and free first minutes, and public toilets both inside and outside the walls. If you are assembling an August route, note that this lands mid-month, the same week the north and the Algarve both fill their calendars. Bring comfortable shoes. Bragança’s walls are beautiful, but the ground is twelfth century and it does not apologise.
