This weekend in Portugal: 5 plans from Arouca's chestnuts to Mértola's hunting fair, plus an extra hour in bed
Arouca's Chestnut Festival fills the old town until Sunday, Mértola's Hunting Fair moves to a new site, Braga's Semibreve wraps up, and Lisbon has a family-and-pets party at Alameda and an independent book fair at Mercado de Arroios. Clocks go back on Sunday.
October already smells of roast chestnuts, and this is the weekend Portugal starts taking that seriously. Here are five plans from the Minho to the Alentejo, most of them free. And a bonus on Sunday: at 2am the clocks go back to 1am, so there is an extra hour to spend wherever you like.
Chestnut Festival, Arouca (until Sunday 25)
Arouca’s old town is the venue, with activities spread across Terreiro de Santa Mafalda, Avenida 25 de Abril, Praça Brandão de Vasconcelos and the town park. The Arouca council’s programme gets Saturday walking: an 11km hike or a 15km trail on the PR 2 route, a guided mushroom foray, and cooking demos built around local chestnuts and wild mushrooms. At 10pm, Marotos da Concertina play.
Sunday brings a family day at the Municipal Museum, a folk dance workshop and, at 6pm, a fire show in Praça Brandão de Vasconcelos to close the festival. Entry is free. The hike, the trail, the mushroom foray and two paid guided visits (€5 and €7.50) needed advance booking, which closed on 21 and 22 October, but the cooking demos, the concert and the 11pm magusto chestnut roast are open to all.
Hunting Fair, Mértola (Saturday 24 to Monday 26)
The 17th edition moves house. For the first time it takes place at Mértola’s municipal sports and leisure park, which the council says gives exhibitors, demonstrations and outdoor activities more room. It is a fair about hunting, nature conservation, rural life and, inevitably, food, so arrive hungry.
Festa do Animal, Lisbon (Saturday 24)
In the Alameda D. Afonso Henriques gardens, from 11am to 6pm, there are bouncy castles, face painting, a karate demo, games and open-air cinema, and the family pets are invited too. It is produced by PiT and Feito with support from the Areeiro parish council.
FLIFA, Lisbon (Saturday and Sunday)
Arroios’s Independent Book Festival takes over Mercado de Arroios on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 7pm. Small publishers, books that rarely make it into the big chains, and a neighbourhood market around it for coffee.
Semibreve, Braga (until Sunday 25)
Braga’s festival of electronic music and digital art reaches its final weekend, and it is where you hear things nobody has heard before: this year’s line-up includes seven world premieres. Check times and tickets on the festival site before you set off.
With that extra hour on Sunday, it all fits.
