Jennie dropped 'Less Than a Lover' and shot the whole video in Girona
Jennie is back with 'Less Than a Lover', her first solo song of 2026, written and directed by her and filmed in the streets of Girona, Spain.
Jennie is back, and she took her time about it. ‘Less Than a Lover’ arrived on Friday and it is her first new song of 2026 — warm acoustic guitar, vintage electric keys and a tempo that seems built for eleven o’clock on an August night.
What is ‘Less Than a Lover’ about?
That awkward stretch between friendship and a relationship. The song parks itself right there, in the uncertainty of two people who are already more than friends but have not said so out loud, and it handles the subject without any drama: instead of a big chorus it goes for atmosphere. Summery, but the thoughtful kind.
Who made it matters too. Jennie wrote it, created the music and directed it — this is not a singer handed a finished track, it is someone running the whole thing end to end. The song is expected to land on her second solo album, which makes it a hint about where that record is heading: less dancefloor, more bedroom.
Where was the ‘Less Than a Lover’ video filmed?
In Girona, Catalonia. The video, also written and directed by her, stars Jennie and Taiwanese model Nah Kai in a summer romance you can tell will last precisely one season, shot through the streets and landscapes of the Spanish city. It is lovely in a faintly sad way, which suits the song.
For anyone following Blackpink, this is another chapter in a group that has spent years operating on two floors at once — the collective touring machine downstairs and four solo careers upstairs, each growing its own personality. Official announcements land on the group’s site. And if you are hunting for something to watch next, Netflix’s August slate has plenty to be going on with.
