Heat cranking up, fire lurking: the warning for this end of June
Around fifty municipalities hit maximum wildfire risk and the thermometer flirted with 40C inland. What that asks of all of us.
Summer has properly arrived, and it brought its usual companion: too much heat, and fire risk climbing right along with it. Over the past few days the interior baked near 40C, with the Douro valley, the Tagus basin and inland Alentejo topping the list. This isn’t just discomfort — it’s dry fuel waiting for a spark.
The risk map
Thanks to that dryness, around fifty municipalities reached maximum rural fire risk, mostly in the districts of Bragança, Vila Real, Guarda, Viseu, Castelo Branco, Santarém and Portalegre. The good news is that forecasts pointed to some relief from Thursday onwards, with much of the country slipping back to lower risk. But dropping your guard now would be the classic mistake.
What to do (and not do)
The rules are simple and they save a lot of people’s summer: no burning, no fireworks, no cigarettes flicked from car windows, no barbecues outside approved spots. Anyone living or hiking near scrubland should keep the ground around the house clear and have an escape plan in mind. And at the first sign of smoke, call 112 — fast.
If you’re on holiday, it’s worth checking your municipality’s risk level before hitting the road or laying out the picnic. A small move today heads off a tragedy tomorrow.
