Portugal's state-backed internships are open again, with up to 80% of the grant paid by the IEFP
Round two of the IEFP's Estágios +Talento and Estágios Iniciar opened on 12 October and closes at 6pm on 7 December, or sooner if the budget runs out. Monthly grants run from €913.12 to €1,396.54, and it's the employer who applies, on iefponline.
Apply / Learn morePortugal’s employment institute, the IEFP, has reopened its subsidised internships, and this is not one to leave until December. The second round of Estágios +Talento and Estágios Iniciar opened at 9am on 12 October and closes at 6pm on 7 December, or earlier if the money runs out first, according to the IEFP’s notice on the new application window.
That “or earlier” is not a formality. Medida +Emprego, another IEFP hiring incentive, closes on 26 October, 50 days ahead of schedule, for exactly that reason.
Who applies
The employer does, not the intern. Applications go through the iefponline portal, in the organisation’s own management area, and anyone not yet registered there has to sign up first.
The intern comes later, chosen by the employer within each scheme’s rules.
+Talento: graduates up to 35
Estágios +Talento are for unemployed people aged up to 35 with a level 6 qualification or above, which in practice means at least a bachelor’s degree. The placement lasts six months in a real workplace.
The monthly grant runs from €1,181.69 to €1,396.54 depending on qualifications, and the IEFP covers up to 80% of it. At the top of the scale, that leaves the employer covering roughly €280 of the grant each month (other costs, such as insurance, are separate).
Iniciar: for school leavers
Estágios Iniciar are aimed at young and unemployed people who have finished secondary or post-secondary education. The grant sits between €913.12 and €966.83 a month, again co-funded by the IEFP.
All of these amounts are pegged to the IAS, Portugal’s social-support index, which is €537.13 in 2026. Iniciar pays 1.7 to 1.8 times the IAS, +Talento 2.2 to 2.6 times.
Why sooner is better
The first 2026 round ran from 10 February to 30 July, and there are usually two a year. On that pattern, miss this one and the next chance should be in 2027. If you have a vacancy, the safest move is to get registered on iefponline now and read each scheme’s rules before you submit.
