Portugal vs Spain in the last 16: the Iberian derby nobody wanted this early
Monday in Dallas, Portugal face a Spain side yet to concede a goal at the World Cup. Ronaldo against Lamine Yamal, and the whole peninsula holding its breath.
Of all the possible last-16 pairings, Portugal drew the heaviest one. On Monday the 6th, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington (Dallas), Portugal and Spain play for a place in the World Cup 2026 quarter-finals — and it is hard to imagine a tougher test this early in the tournament.
How do Portugal and Spain arrive?
Spain look the team to beat. They won Group H, brushed Austria aside 3-0 in the round of 32, and have not conceded a single goal in the competition. At the heart of it is 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, who against the Austrians produced what many rated his best performance yet in a Spain shirt.
Portugal have taken the bumpier road. They finished second in Group K, behind Colombia, and had to grind past Croatia: Ronaldo tucked away a penalty before Gonçalo Ramos headed home a 2-1 winner in the 94th minute. It has not been the commanding football people expected, but they are through — and in a knockout, that is half the battle.
Ronaldo, at 41, against the 18-year-old
The age gap says everything about this game. On one side, Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, with 25 goals at major international tournaments — five more than any other European man. On the other, Lamine Yamal, who was not yet born when Ronaldo made his international debut. Bookmakers favour Spain, and one model gives them a 64% chance. But Iberian derbies rarely respect the odds.
The winner meets the victor of USA vs Belgium, played the same day, in the quarter-finals. Before that, keep water close and patience closer: the country is under a fresh heat wave, and plenty of people will be watching this one in the shade.
