Vitória SC beat Marítimo 5-0 in Guimarães on Friday night, in the game that opened matchday 9 of the Primeira Liga. Vitória had gone five league games without a win, and this one came with plenty to spare.
The first half was hard going. The opener only arrived in the 38th minute, from an Arnel Jakupovic direct free kick. After the break it was a different evening: Paulo Henrique turned the ball into his own net on 48 minutes, Oumar Camara made it three on the hour, Jakupovic got his second on 76 and Yeimar Mosquera finished it off in stoppage time. Both Jakupovic and Mosquera were scoring for the club for the first time.
At the other end there was a debut. Lucas Furtado started in goal in the league for the first time and kept a clean sheet.
”A turning point”
Head coach Tiago Margarido sounded relieved. He said he believed this could be a turning point for the rest of the season, and that the difference from earlier games was simple: this time his side took their chances. The international break went on breaking down low blocks and on set pieces, and the first goal, a direct free kick, came straight out of that work.
Where it leaves them
The three points take Vitória to 8, level with Marítimo, and lift them away from the relegation places, for now at least. Moreirense, Famalicão and Rio Ave still play this round and could go back above them.
The rest of the weekend’s fixtures follow a European week in which Benfica won 4-1 against Omonia in Nicosia. For Marítimo, the trip home to Madeira comes with five goals conceded and none scored.
