Guimarães is deep in the Gualterianas until 3 August, and the big concerts cost nothing
The Festas da Cidade e Gualterianas run in Guimarães from 24 July to 3 August. Concerts at Largo do Toural are free, and the programme mixes a craft fair, folk dancing, fado nights and the closing Gualteriana march.
Guimarães spends the end of July smelling of fried dough and echoing with drums, and there is still time to catch the best of it. The Festas da Cidade e Gualterianas started on 24 July and only bow out on 3 August.
Who is playing at the Gualterianas 2026?
The big concerts are at Largo do Toural and they cost nothing. Theo & The Dons and Fragmentos open on 30 July, Bárbara Bandeira takes 31 July, Dillaz has the night of 1 August and GNR close things out on 2 August. It is a line-up that manages to please three generations of the same family without anyone buying a ticket.
What else is on besides the music?
Plenty, and this is where these festivities separate themselves from any old summer festival. The craft fair is in its 28th edition and fills the historic centre with pottery, linen and tinwork. There is an international folk festival, fado nights, a wandering parade of concertina players, a livestock fair with a cattle competition, a procession of antique carriages and the return of the horse race.
The religious high point is the procession in honour of São Gualter, and the finale is the Gualteriana march, setting off earlier than usual this year. If you have never seen it, this is the part where the entire city takes to the street and the rest of the country understands why Guimarães takes these things seriously.
Is it worth going now?
Yes, especially the weekend of 31 July to 2 August, which packs in the three biggest names. If you drive, arrive early and park well away from the historic centre, which is closed to traffic. The full day-by-day programme is on the council’s cultural agenda, and anyone wanting to stretch the month has an August packed with festivals from north to south.
