The Óbidos Medieval Market returns from 16 to 26 July 2026, daily from 5pm to 11.55pm, inside the town walls. For its 24th edition the theme is the court of King Fernando and Leonor Teles — and the setting, as ever, is half the show: narrow streets, a floodlit castle and around 150,000 visitors per edition travelling back in time.

When is the Óbidos Medieval Market?

From Thursday 16 July to Sunday 26 July, with the grounds open from 5pm to 11.55pm. Tickets cost €8 to €10 for adults, €5 for children aged 6 to 12, and are free for under-5s — on sale on the official site and at the gate.

What is there to see and eat?

A bit of everything, as long as it is seven hundred years old: jousting tournaments in the arena by the castle, falconry displays, street theatre, medieval music, processions and more than 30 taverns where spit-roast suckling pig, kid goat, Alentejo bread and mead rule the menu. Jugglers, merchants and storytellers fill every corner of the town — allow plenty of time, and arrive hungry.

Away from the big festival arenas, it is one of the loveliest summer outings in the country — and it works as well for families as for anyone who simply fancies dinner in another century.

The Festas da Cidade da Maia 2026 run from 3 to 13 July at the Jardim das Pirâmides, with concerts, folklore, a procession and fireworks. If you have a free weekend and Greater Porto is within reach, there’s something for the whole family.

Who is headlining the Festas da Maia 2026?

The music line-up leans on popular names: Mickael Carreira plays on 11 July, Wet Bed Gang on the 12th and Némanus close things out on the 13th, just before the final fireworks display. The Jardins do Marquês - Oeiras Valley 2026 festival runs from 26 June to 6 July at the Parque dos Poetas in Oeiras, and is now heading into its last night. Just outside Lisbon, it is a festival that bets on variety rather than a single headliner.

Who played Jardins do Marquês 2026?

The programme brought together very different names: Brazil’s Baco Exu do Blues, Britain’s The Stranglers, Cape Verdean-Portuguese artist Dino D’Santiago and America’s Thee Sacred Souls. There was also a jazz night, with American bassist esperanza spalding meeting Portuguese pianist Júlio Resende, and even a Comedy Night of Portuguese stand-up.

When does Jardins do Marquês end?

The closing night is 6 July, so there’s still time. If you like calmer, open-air festivals, Jardins do Marquês steers clear of the stadium-blowout formula and plays on quality and diversity in a breezy setting. Tickets are sold by the night, so you can pick just the day you want without paying for a full pass.

While half the country hunts for a beach and a patch of shade to escape the heat, some people prefer their summer with the guitars turned up to eleven. For them, Sunday’s plan is set: Evil Live lands at the MEO Arena in Lisbon on 5 July.

What to expect from Evil Live?

It is an urban festival with a clear identity — metalcore, hardcore and alternative rock, all served inside an air-conditioned hall, which, let us be honest, on a weekend like this is halfway to happiness already. Trading blistering sun for an indoor venue and a wall of sound is not for everyone, but if you love the genre you know exactly what we mean.

If there’s a festival built for people who love music but avoid crowds, it’s CoolJazz. From 8 to 31 July, Parque Marechal Carmona in Cascais turns once again into an open-air amphitheatre where the sound is good, the gardens breathe, and you catch the sunset before the big concert.

The line-up

This year’s programme is generous and varied. Cascais welcomes names like Gilberto Gil (8th), David Byrne (14th), Loyle Carner (15th), Jamiroquai (18th), pianist Diana Krall (22nd), Franz Ferdinand (25th), Scissor Sisters (29th) and Chet Faker (31st). It’s jazz, funk, indie and soul — a festival that shifts mood with the night.

Unlike the big arena festivals, CoolJazz offers several performances per night, with doors at 7pm and the Cascais Jazz Sessions opening from 8pm, before the main concert on the Ageas Stage. The park setting, with grass and shade, invites you to arrive early and linger. Tickets are per concert, so it’s worth picking the night that speaks to you most.

It’s the opposite of a survival festival: here the charm is in taking it easy.

While half of Europe hunts for the most expensive mega-festival, the Vale do Sousa is a reminder that the best party is often the one in the town next door. The Festas da Cidade de Rebordosa, in honour of São Miguel, have taken over this town in the Paredes municipality and run until Monday 6 July, with music, tradition and the obligatory dose of fireworks.

What’s on

The line-up mixes crowd-pleasing pop and folk with names that fill any street festival: Toy, Calema, MC IG, Danni Gato and the Gipsy Kings Family take the stage across the days. In between there are parades, brass bands, DJ sets, processions and the kind of street atmosphere only folk festivals have — the sort where you eat a bifana standing up and stay late just for the fireworks.

How to finish in style

Monday’s closing promises to be one of the busiest: a big motorcycle parade, drumming, samba schools, an electric-trio float with DJs and street entertainment until midnight, capped by the traditional pyromusical show. For families, it’s one of those programmes with something for every age.

Entry to the concerts is mostly free — bring good spirits, comfortable shoes and some patience for the traffic on the way out.

If any landscape calls for a glass of wine in hand, it’s the Douro. And it’s right there, at the Porto Comercial de Cambres in Peso da Régua, that the Douro & Porto Wine Festival returns on 3 and 4 July — billed as the Iberian Peninsula’s biggest wine festival, with the river and terraced vineyards as its backdrop.

What to expect

The formula brings together three national passions: wine, food and music. The Wine Village gathers dozens of producers from the Douro region and Port Wine for tastings, while the Chef’s Court brings several national chefs presenting gourmet dishes. In between, Portuguese and international artists liven up the two nights, which run from 6pm to 2am.

How to make the most of it

Set deep in the demarcated region, the festival is also the perfect excuse for a weekend escape. Lamego, Peso da Régua and Pinhão are a stone’s throw away and make an ideal base if you want to stretch the trip and visit the estates by daylight.

A practical tip: the Douro gets seriously hot in summer, so a hat, water and comfortable shoes are worth it for wandering between the stalls.

Some festivals happen in stadiums and some prefer a clearing among the trees. LISB-ON is one of the latter, and it returns to Monsanto on 3 and 4 July to turn Lisbon’s largest park into an open-air dance floor.

The recipe is familiar and still works: electronic music from start to finish, without locking itself to a single style. House, techno, jazz and soul weave through the weekend, with international DJs passing through the various stages set up amid the greenery.

Dancing under the trees

LISB-ON’s real trump card is the setting. For anyone living in or passing through Lisbon this weekend, it’s a relaxed alternative to the big beach festivals that dominate the summer calendar. Less stadium crowd, more picnic-with-good-music atmosphere.

The summer of festivals is not just Lisbon, and the North has a heavyweight card this year. MEO Marés Vivas returns from 17 to 19 July, now in Leça da Palmeira, Matosinhos, after years hugging the Gaia riverside. The change of home gives it fresh air and a lineup to match.

Worth going?

For anyone in greater Porto, it is one of the most complete summer cards without crossing the country. For those coming from afar, Matosinhos pays off: beach by day, concerts by night and the best sardines and seafood a few metres away. If you like a festival with the sea on the doorstep, this is the plan.

If there’s one festival that puts the whole Ribatejo out on the street, this is it. From July 3 to 5, Vila Franca de Xira celebrates the 94th Colete Encarnado, its biggest festival, with three days devoted to the Tejo floodplains and the figure at the heart of it all: the campino, the region’s traditional herdsman.

If you’ve never seen it, here’s a taste. There are bulls in the streets and in the ring, campinos on horseback, bull runs, esperas and an encierro for the younger crowd. The most anticipated moment is the Homage to the Campino, which this year honours Francisco Honrado with the Pampilho de Honra. And on the 5th, the Palha Blanco ring hosts the traditional mixed bullfight.
