Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is on Netflix with 10 episodes and a whole new crew

The second Edgerunners premiered on Netflix on 20 October. It's a standalone story with new characters, animated again by Japan's Studio TRIGGER in collaboration with CD PROJEKT RED, the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077.

Four years after the first one, the new Cyberpunk: Edgerunners landed on Netflix on 20 October, all 10 episodes at once. If you were hoping to catch up with David Martinez, lower your expectations now: this is a new story with a new cast, set in the same Night City.

CD PROJEKT RED announced the date and format in August, alongside the trailer. Animation is once again by Studio TRIGGER, the Japanese studio behind season one, working with the Polish company that made the game.

You can start here

The studio calls this a standalone series, which is good news for anyone who never got round to the original. You don’t need to have played Cyberpunk 2077 or seen the 2022 episodes. A tolerance for neon, cybernetic implants and characters who reliably make the worst possible choice is enough.

For returning fans the bar is high. The 2022 season sat at 100% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and is often credited with sending a lot of people back to Cyberpunk 2077, a game whose launch two years earlier had been a mess.

Who it’s for

If season one is any guide, it’s adult anime, with graphic violence and language to match, so not one for family movie night. Ten episodes fit neatly into a weekend, and this one has a bonus hour, since the clocks go back early on Sunday.

If you want something gentler from the same catalogue, Netflix also brought back Kristen Bell and Adam Brody’s romantic comedy this week, which is about as far from Night City as television gets.

All 10 episodes of Nobody Wants This season 3 are streaming, and the will-they-won't-they is over

Netflix released the third season of Nobody Wants This on 22 October, all at once. Joanne and Noah move in together, the drama shifts to Sasha, Esther and Morgan, and Andrew Rannells, Keyla Monterroso Mejia and Sarah Silverman join the cast.

Season three of Nobody Wants This landed on Netflix on Thursday 22 October, all ten episodes at once. It also changes the question the show has run on until now. For two seasons, the story of Joanne (Kristen Bell), an agnostic podcaster who talks about sex without a filter, and Noah (Adam Brody), a rabbi, was about whether the couple could survive their differences. Season two ended with them choosing each other again. In season three they move in…

U2 name the new album Carnaval De Luz, due 13 November, with Dolly Parton on the closer

It is the band's 16th studio album and their first full-length record of new songs in nine years. Rosalía features on "The Mirror Maker", Brian Eno co-writes three songs, and "Torn", a country duet, is the last vocal Dolly Parton recorded before her death in August.

U2 will release their 16th studio album on 13 November, and it is called Carnaval De Luz. It is their first full-length album of new songs in nine years (they had already put out two six-song EPs this year, Days of Ash and Easter Lily), and the official announcement on U2's site carries the full 12-song list. The last track is the one people will talk about. "Torn" is a country duet written by U2 with Dolly Parton and Johnny McDaid, and the band describes…

Andrew Garfield leads a medieval uprising (that already stumbled in the US)

Paul Greengrass's "The Uprising" dramatizes the 1381 peasants' revolt against Richard II. It opened in the US to $3.25 million on a $20 million budget, and has been in Portuguese cinemas since 17 September.

"The Uprising" (in Portugal, "A Revolta") has been in Portuguese cinemas since 17 September, distributed by Medeia Filmes, after a US opening that fell well short of expectations. Paul Greengrass's film dramatizes England's Peasants' Revolt of 1381, a popular uprising against King Richard II in a country still recovering from the Black Death and squeezed by the taxes paying for the Hundred Years' War. Andrew Garfield plays the ploughman who ends up…

Jorge Palma died on Monday night at the age of 76. His family and his agency confirmed the death in a statement, giving the cause as cardiorespiratory arrest. Resident Evil is back in cinemas with a story the games never told

Zach Cregger's reboot runs alongside the Raccoon City night of the second game without using any of its characters. It reached Portuguese cinemas on 17 September, rated M/16, at 93 minutes.

Eight films across twenty-four years, two reboots, and this is the first one where nobody will recognise the lead. That is the point. The Resident Evil that opened in Portuguese cinemas on 17 September follows Bryan, a medical courier on his way to Raccoon City General when the outbreak starts. Not Leon, not Claire, none of the faces Capcom built over three decades. Zach Cregger, who wrote and directed it, set out the reasoning in an interview PlayStation…

The film Portugal is sending to the Oscars was shot entirely inside Coimbra

'A Memória do Cheiro das Coisas', by António Ferreira, beat five other titles in a vote of Portuguese Film Academy members. It follows a colonial-war veteran who moves into a care home and refuses to be looked after by a Black Portuguese carer.

A Memória do Cheiro das Coisas, directed by António Ferreira, will represent Portugal in the Best International Feature category at the 99th Academy Awards, on 14 March 2027 in Los Angeles. It is worth knowing what it is walking into. Portugal has entered this category every year since 1980, and we counted the run the academy and the category register keep between them: 42 entries across 46 years, not one of them nominated. No country has tried more times…

Portugal's readers are reading more and buying less

An APEL study with Nielsen GfK puts the reading rate at 78%, its highest in three years, up from 73% in 2023. Over the same period the share of people who bought at least one book fell from 65% to 62%, and the average per buyer dropped from 7.5 books to 6.9.

More people are reading. Fewer people are paying for it. Both sentences come out of the same study, presented this week at the opening of Book 2.0 at the Centro Cultural de Belém, and the gap between them is the interesting part. Start with the good news. The reading rate went from 73% in 2023 to 76% in 2024 and 78% last year, which is the share of people aged 15 and over who say they read at least one book that year, and the highest figure of the three.…
