Slow Horses returns on 16 September with Slough House on the run

Season six of the Gary Oldman spy drama premieres on Apple TV on 16 September, one episode a week through to 21 October. It adapts two Mick Herron novels, and this time the trouble starts inside MI5.

Some series curdle once they get big. This one has not, and it is back on 16 September.

Season six of Slow Horses premieres that day on Apple TV, one episode at a time, weekly, through to 21 October. Six weeks of calendar, the format the show has always used, with no binge on day one.

What changes

The premise flips. Until now Slough House has been the drawer MI5 files its failures in, with the danger arriving from outside or from above. This season Diana Taverner, Kristin Scott Thomas’s character, drags the slow horses into a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge, and the upshot is that they have to run. Leaving the desk has never gone well for these people.

Gary Oldman is still Jackson Lamb, probably the most repellent man on television that audiences remain fond of, and Jack Lowden is back as River Cartwright.

The books underneath

The season adapts “Joe Country” and “Slough House”, the sixth and seventh novels in Mick Herron’s Slough House series, which won the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger. Readers will know this is the stretch where the books darken, and that Herron stops being gentle with anyone from here on.

If you are arriving now, the five earlier seasons are all there, and the house habit of six episodes a year makes catching up a genuinely achievable weekend. Looking for something else on the same service? Ted Lasso’s fourth season is the exact tonal opposite.
