Ted Lasso is back on Apple TV with the softest reviews of its run
Season four landed on Wednesday with the first of ten episodes, and Ted has taken charge of Richmond's second-division women's side. New episodes drop weekly until 7 October.
Three years after a finale that felt like a full stop, the moustache is back on the touchline. Ted Lasso returned to Apple TV on Wednesday, 5 August, with the first of ten episodes. The rest arrive weekly, every Wednesday, through to 7 October.
Jason Sudeikis is back in the role, but the job has changed. Ted returns to Richmond to coach the club’s women’s team, a second-division side that grew out of a project Keeley had been pushing for two seasons. The Lady Greyhounds are his problem now.
That is a bolder swing than it first sounds. The whole show was built around a dressing room viewers knew by heart, and season four swaps a good deal of it for new faces.
The reviews are the coldest yet
This is where it gets uncomfortable. Season four has drawn the softest critical reception of the show’s entire run. Some critics argued Ted should have stayed retired. One called it sweet but empty. Others pushed back hard, pointing to a new self-assurance in how the series handles Ted starting over.
The workable consensus sits roughly here: people who loved the show will keep loving it, people who always found the tone too well-behaved will find it unchanged, and Tanya Reynolds, as assistant coach Alice Chilton, is the breakout almost everyone agrees on.
If you are budgeting your streaming month, August is busy. HBO Max brings Lanterns on 17 August, while Netflix closes out two big series, including the Pogues’ last ride in Outer Banks.
Trailers and official episode details are published in the Apple TV’s own announcement of season four.
