Renew your Portuguese residence permit between 90 and 30 days before it expires

Automatic extensions are gone and renewals are now entirely online, released in monthly waves. The window for permits expiring in November and December 2026 is already open.

For years, anyone holding a Portuguese residence permit about to run out had an informal safety net. Automatic extensions were rolled over by decree whenever AIMA’s queue grew too long. That net has been taken away. Since late 2025 there is no general extension, and a card that expires now genuinely expires.

What replaced it is a fully digital process at portal-renovacoes.aima.gov.pt, released in monthly waves so that half a million people are not pressing the same button on the same morning. The next wave is already live: if your permit runs out in November or December 2026, you can submit now rather than waiting for the expiry date.

The window, in one line

Between 90 and 30 days before the permit expires. Earlier than 90 and the system will not take it. Later than 30 and you are in the stretch where things go wrong.

Aim for the first half of that window rather than the final week. The replacement card takes a while to arrive, and in the meantime the document that matters is a different one.

The receipt is the paper that counts

The moment you submit, the portal issues a proof of submission. That receipt, not the expired card, is what demonstrates a regular status to an employer, a landlord, a bank or a border officer travelling inside the Schengen area.

Keep it both on your phone and on paper. We have covered the 60-day tacit approval rule and the July and August renewal wave, and the same pattern shows up each time. People who submit early and keep the receipt rarely run into trouble. People who leave it to the last week end up depending on luck.

One warning for travellers. Leaving the Schengen area with an expired card and a pending file is the most fragile point in the whole process, because the receipt does not stand in for a valid residence document when you come back through an external border. The conditions and the document checklist for each renewal type are set out on the AIMA portal, and it is worth going through the list before you submit — one missing item restarts the wait.
