The war between the United States and Iran has just crossed another line. A drone and missile attack on the al-Azraq base in Jordan killed two American soldiers — the first US deaths since the ceasefire collapsed, bringing the American military toll in this conflict to fifteen. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed the strike openly, and the answer came within hours: Washington launched a fresh wave of strikes on Iranian territory overnight.
What happened at the al-Azraq base?
The base, used by US forces in eastern Jordan, was hit in one of the waves of drones and missiles Iran has been firing at countries hosting American troops. It is the first time in this escalation that US personnel have died outside the Gulf — and the first time Jordan, which had tried hard to stay out of the crossfire, appears on the casualty map. Amman has so far announced no response of its own.
The timing could hardly be worse. As we reported this Sunday, the conflict is into its eighth night and even the Gulf’s water supply has become a target, after a week in which the ceasefire came apart for good amid crossed strikes and accusations.
What happens next?
Nothing that sounds like a brake. Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, dismissed US ambitions in the region as “naive fantasy”, while the Pentagon — which confirmed the two deaths — has vowed to answer every attack; official statements are being posted by the US Department of Defense. With American bases spread across Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, every new wave of drones widens the board — and every casualty makes a return to the table harder. If you are following from a distance, the short version is this: the war that started over the Strait of Hormuz no longer fits inside the Gulf.
