Trump, Sheinbaum and Carney share a World Cup final box — and it doubles as a summit

Trump invited Sheinbaum and Carney to watch the World Cup 2026 final at MetLife Stadium, their first in-person meeting since December — two days before USMCA talks resume in Mexico City.

Today’s World Cup final has a second match happening off the pitch. Donald Trump invited Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, to watch Argentina-Spain with him at MetLife Stadium — and both said yes. The leaders of the tournament’s three host countries will share a box in New Jersey, in their first in-person gathering since December.

Why does a stadium box count as a summit?

Because the neighbourhood has been anything but calm. Tariffs, cartels and migration have strained months of relations between Trump and Sheinbaum — who have still managed roughly twenty phone calls since January. The Mexican president had met Trump in person only once, at the World Cup draw in December; accepting this invitation, her office explained via the official Mexican government portal, is a goodwill gesture at a moment when a great deal sits on the table. Carney, for his part, inherits a US relationship soured by the trade war — and ninety minutes of football is, at the very least, neutral ground.

When do the USMCA talks resume?

On Tuesday. The third round of the trade pact’s review runs from 21 to 23 July in Mexico City, with steel, autos, agriculture and electronic payments among the hot files. So the three leaders watch the final together on Sunday and their negotiating teams sit down 48 hours later — call it a coincidence if you like.

As for the match itself: the final kicks off tonight at 8pm Lisbon time, free-to-air on RTP1 for viewers in Portugal, and our World Cup live tracker closes out the tournament tonight. If the diplomacy plays half as well as the football, Mexico City could be a good week.
