Mbappé scores twice, the second his 100th for Real Madrid. Barcelona's perfect start is over
Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid on LaLiga matchday 10: Mbappé on 41 and 88 minutes, Raphinha in between. Barcelona lost for the first time this league season and the top three now sit within three points.
Barcelona went into the Clásico with nine wins from nine. They came out of it with their first league defeat of the season. José Mourinho’s Real Madrid won 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday night, and both goals were Kylian Mbappé’s, the second two minutes from time.
How it went
The opener had luck in it. On 41 minutes a Gerard Martín clearance struck Mbappé and went in off his thigh. Barcelona pushed after the break and Raphinha equalised just past the hour, at a point when Hansi Flick’s side looked likelier to score again.
The winner started with Arda Güler, went through a Jude Bellingham roulette and reached Eduardo Camavinga, who got past Cubarsí and cut it back for Mbappé on 88 minutes. It was his 100th goal for Real Madrid, scored in the stadium where it is hardest to get one. The club’s official match report logs both goals and the Camavinga assist.
Lunin held, Cancelo stayed on
With Thibaut Courtois ruled out by flu, Andriy Lunin kept goal and made one of the saves of the night, from a Gerard Martín header on 66 minutes. At the other end Joan García had his hands full with Güler.
The flashpoint came on 56 minutes when João Cancelo stood on Yan Diomande’s thigh. Madrid wanted the Portuguese defender sent off. He stayed on.
A tight top three
Barcelona are still top, but only just. After ten matchdays:
- Barcelona, 27 points
- Atlético Madrid, 25 points
- Real Madrid, 24 points
Madrid were six points back before kick-off. Now it is three, and Mourinho’s season at the Bernabéu has its first night the fans will remember.
