Samuel Soares, Nuno Tavares and Fábio Silva come into Jorge Jesus's first Portugal squad

Portugal's new head coach named his 25 for the start of the Nations League title defence on Friday at the Cidade do Futebol. João Palhinha returns, and only six of the players picked are at Portuguese clubs.

Twenty-five names, and three of them had never been on a Jorge Jesus list before. Portugal’s head coach named his squad at midday on Friday at the Cidade do Futebol for the first four games of the Nations League, and the arrivals that stand out are goalkeeper Samuel Soares, full-back Nuno Tavares and forward Fábio Silva. João Palhinha, left out of the most recent squads, is back in midfield.

Much of the rest is the spine that went to the World Cup. Diogo Costa and Rui Silva keep the goalkeeping places. In front of them come Rúben Dias, Renato Veiga, Tomás Araújo, Gonçalo Inácio, Nuno Mendes, João Cancelo, Diogo Dalot and Nuno Tavares. The midfield is Rúben Neves, Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, João Neves, Bernardo Silva and Palhinha. Up front, Cristiano Ronaldo, João Félix, Fábio Silva, Francisco Conceição, Rafael Leão, Francisco Trincão, Pedro Neto and Gonçalo Ramos.

Six of the twenty-five play their club football here

It is worth counting. Of the 25 called up, only six play in the Primeira Liga: Diogo Costa at FC Porto, Rui Silva and Gonçalo Inácio at Sporting, and Samuel Soares, Tomás Araújo and Palhinha at Benfica. The other nineteen are scattered across England, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Turkey and Saudi Arabia — four of them in the Saudi league alone, between Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Al Ahli.

That is not a neutral detail for anyone running a national side. Four matches in eleven days, with trips to Oslo and Copenhagen in between, need a squad that arrives intact, and players spread across seven leagues mean seven calendars and seven states of fitness to keep track of.

What is at stake from Thursday

Portugal go into this phase as holders, and the four fixtures were confirmed at the start of September: Wales on the 24th at the Estádio José Alvalade, Norway on the 27th in Oslo, Denmark on 1 October in Copenhagen and Norway again on 4 October at the Dragão. All of them kick off at 19:45. In Group A4 the top two go through to the quarter-finals, third plays a play-off and bottom is relegated — the full calendar is published on the FPF’s site.

For Jesus this is the first squad that is properly his, since he took over from Roberto Martínez. The previous one was picked by another manager with another cycle in mind. This one is not.

Portugal beat Costa Rica 3-0 and reach a U-20 Women's World Cup last 16 for the first time

Anna Marques scored in the 7th and 58th minutes and Carolina Tristao in the 34th. It is Portugal's first ever win at this level, and Spain are next, on Wednesday in Katowice.

Six rounds, six wins, two goals conceded. Sporting drew at Famalicão, slipped to third and now trail the leaders by four, with the clássico waiting one week later.

Round six closed on Sunday night and left one very tidy sum behind it. FC Porto have played six and won six: eighteen points from eighteen, fifteen goals scored, two conceded, all of it there in the official Liga Portugal table. This start has not been built on weekly thrashings. It has been built on never slipping. That is the whole gap to the chasing pair: Benfica have won five and drawn one for sixteen points, while Sporting have now drawn two.

Portugal finished the Taranto Mediterranean Games with 32 medals — 16 gold, seven silver, nine bronze — and eighth place in the table. In three appearances at these Games, the country has never done better. The figure that travelled was 32. It is the least interesting of the three. Tarragona 2018 produced 24 medals. Oran 2022 produced 25. Seven more in four years is quiet progress, and if that were the whole story the line would be close to flat.
