Sporting part ways with Rui Borges, and Paulo Fonseca is lined up to replace him
Sporting have opened talks to end Rui Borges's contract, 18 months after he won the league and cup double, following home defeats to LASK and Académico de Viseu. B-team coach Tiago Fernandes takes the Champions League game with Shakhtar. Lyon's Paulo Fonseca is the club's pick.
Rui Borges is no longer Sporting’s coach. The club met him on Sunday afternoon and said that evening it had begun talks to end his contract, with a successor to be named shortly. Every report points the same way: Paulo Fonseca, who is still in charge at Lyon.
In the meantime the B-team coach, Tiago Fernandes, takes over. His first game is hardly gentle. Sporting face Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday.
A title winner gone before Christmas
It’s an odd exit. Borges arrived on 26 December 2024 to steady the club after João Pereira’s short spell in Rúben Amorim’s old seat, and promptly won the league and the Taça de Portugal. Last season he took Sporting to the Champions League quarter-finals and lost the cup final to Torreense. In May the club extended his contract to 2028, with an option for a further year.
Six months on, the patience has run out. The 2026/27 season started unevenly, and back-to-back home defeats, to LASK in Europe and Académico de Viseu in the league, turned the stands against him. The 2-0 win over Casa Pia in Rio Maior stopped the rot without changing the picture. Sporting are third on 21 points, nine behind FC Porto.
Fonseca heads home
Fonseca is 53 and has coached across Europe: Paços de Ferreira, FC Porto, Braga, Shakhtar, Roma, Lille, AC Milan and, since early 2025, Lyon. His Lyon deal runs to June 2027, so Sporting need the French club to agree to let him go early.
RTP and CNN Portugal both report that the move is close. He is expected to be unveiled after the Shakhtar game (his old club, as it happens), and A Bola has him in the dugout for Saturday’s league match with Moreirense.
Borges, according to the Portuguese sports press, is unhappy with how the exit was handled. Sporting have not said what ending the contract will cost.
