Soon you'll pick who answers on your iPhone: ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude
Apple is building a system that lets you decide which AI sits behind Apple Intelligence. More choice — and a curious behind-the-scenes twist.
Apple is cooking up something many people will like: an “Extensions” system that lets you choose which artificial intelligence handles Apple Intelligence features. Want ChatGPT? Google’s Gemini? Anthropic’s Claude? Soon the call could be yours — with Gemini showing up as the default option.
Behind the scenes, there’s a tasty detail: Apple reportedly licensed a custom Gemini model from Google for around a billion dollars a year. So the company that’s always liked to do everything in-house has, this time, gone shopping at a rival’s.
Why this is good for you
Because choice usually means better service. Being able to switch assistants depending on the task — one for writing, another for coding, another for everyday questions — hands a bit of power back to the person holding the phone. And in a world where AI is everywhere, it’s healthy not to be locked into a single brand.
