ESA's Venus orbiter has a Coimbra company on board
Active Space Technologies has confirmed it is taking part in EnVision, the European Space Agency mission to Venus. The spacecraft was selected in 2021 and is due to launch in the early 2030s.
Founded in 2004 and based in Coimbra, Active Space Technologies does one fairly narrow thing: bespoke electro-mechanical systems for extreme environments. Instruments, mechanisms, actuators, wireless sensing. Hardware that has to keep working where nothing was designed to work. Which is how it comes to be taking part in EnVision, Europe’s mission to Venus.
This is not the company’s first trip out of the atmosphere. Over two decades it has contributed to more than thirty space missions, mostly alongside the European Space Agency, and it is one of the fixtures of the small space cluster that has grown up around Coimbra and the Instituto Pedro Nunes, where Neuraspace closed a 15.6 million round earlier this month.
What EnVision is
EnVision was picked in 2021 as the fifth medium-class mission in ESA’s science programme. The plan is to study Venus as a whole system, from its inner core out to its atmosphere, at a resolution never achieved at that planet. Launch is pencilled in for the early 2030s.
In engineering terms Venus is about the most hostile place in the solar system a spacecraft can realistically be sent to. Surface temperatures run near 465 degrees and surface pressure is roughly 90 times Earth’s. An orbiter never goes down there, but the radiation environment and the proximity to the Sun set thermal demands that very little hardware survives. The full mission file sits on ESA’s own page.
Why a Coimbra firm ends up in this
European science missions are not built by one country. They are spread across industrial consortia in several member states, and there are technical niches where a small company competes on level terms with far bigger groups. The same logic explains other Portuguese footholds in space programmes, including the Mars analogue mission running at Alqueva.
The early-2030s launch date also carries a quiet discomfort for anyone doing this work: the hardware leaving Coimbra will have to keep functioning long after most of us have forgotten the mission exists.
