If there’s a festival built for people who love music but avoid crowds, it’s CoolJazz. From 8 to 31 July, Parque Marechal Carmona in Cascais turns once again into an open-air amphitheatre where the sound is good, the gardens breathe, and you catch the sunset before the big concert.

The line-up

This year’s programme is generous and varied. Cascais welcomes names like Gilberto Gil (8th), David Byrne (14th), Loyle Carner (15th), Jamiroquai (18th), pianist Diana Krall (22nd), Franz Ferdinand (25th), Scissor Sisters (29th) and Chet Faker (31st). It’s jazz, funk, indie and soul — a festival that shifts mood with the night.

How it works

Unlike the big arena festivals, CoolJazz offers several performances per night, with doors at 7pm and the Cascais Jazz Sessions opening from 8pm, before the main concert on the Ageas Stage. The park setting, with grass and shade, invites you to arrive early and linger. Tickets are per concert, so it’s worth picking the night that speaks to you most.

It’s the opposite of a survival festival: here the charm is in taking it easy.

Óbidos Medieval Market 2026: dates, tickets and what to expect from the 24th edition

The Óbidos Medieval Market returns from 16 to 26 July 2026, daily from 5pm to 11.55pm, inside the town walls. For its 24th edition the theme is the court of King Fernando and Leonor Teles — and the setting, as ever, is half the show: narrow streets, a floodlit castle and around 150,000 visitors per edition travelling back in time.

When is the Óbidos Medieval Market?

From Thursday 16 July to Sunday 26 July, with the grounds open from 5pm to 11.55pm. Tickets cost €8 to €10 for adults, €5 for children aged 6 to 12, and are free for under-5s — on sale on the official site and at the gate.

What is there to see and eat?

A bit of everything, as long as it is seven hundred years old: jousting tournaments in the arena by the castle, falconry displays, street theatre, medieval music, processions and more than 30 taverns where spit-roast suckling pig, kid goat, Alentejo bread and mead rule the menu. Jugglers, merchants and storytellers fill every corner of the town — allow plenty of time, and arrive hungry.

Away from the big festival arenas, it is one of the loveliest summer outings in the country — and it works as well for families as for anyone who simply fancies dinner in another century.

The Festas da Cidade da Maia 2026 run from 3 to 13 July at the Jardim das Pirâmides, with concerts, folklore, a procession and fireworks. If you have a free weekend and Greater Porto is within reach, there’s something for the whole family.

Who is headlining the Festas da Maia 2026?

The music line-up leans on popular names: Mickael Carreira plays on 11 July, Wet Bed Gang on the 12th and Némanus close things out on the 13th, just before the final fireworks display. In between there is a folklore festival, urban dance, a student-band contest on the town-hall steps and plenty of street entertainment from the 10th to the 13th.

How much do the Festas da Maia cost?

Most of the programme is free to enter, in true city-festival style — bring the family, grab a bifana and hear live music without a ticket. The religious side is there too: the procession in honour of Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho is set for 4pm on 12 July.

It is the kind of summer arraial that fills an evening without emptying your wallet.

The Jardins do Marquês - Oeiras Valley 2026 festival runs from 26 June to 6 July at the Parque dos Poetas in Oeiras, and is now heading into its last night. Just outside Lisbon, it is a festival that bets on variety rather than a single headliner.

Who played Jardins do Marquês 2026?

The programme brought together very different names: Brazil’s Baco Exu do Blues, Britain’s The Stranglers, Cape Verdean-Portuguese artist Dino D’Santiago and America’s Thee Sacred Souls. There was also a jazz night, with American bassist esperanza spalding meeting Portuguese pianist Júlio Resende, and even a Comedy Night of Portuguese stand-up.

When does Jardins do Marquês end?

The closing night is 6 July, so there’s still time. If you like calmer, open-air festivals, Jardins do Marquês steers clear of the stadium-blowout formula and plays on quality and diversity in a breezy setting. Tickets are sold by the night, so you can pick just the day you want without paying for a full pass.

It is the ideal send-off for anyone after good music without the crush of the big arenas.

The urban festival devoted to metal, hardcore and alternative rock returns to Lisbon on 5 July — for anyone who likes their summer in distortion mode.

Evil Live

While half the country hunts for a beach and a patch of shade to escape the heat, some people prefer their summer with the guitars turned up to eleven. For them, Sunday’s plan is set: Evil Live lands at the MEO Arena in Lisbon on 5 July.

What to expect from Evil Live?

It is an urban festival with a clear identity — metalcore, hardcore and alternative rock, all served inside an air-conditioned hall, which, let us be honest, on a weekend like this is halfway to happiness already. Trading blistering sun for an indoor venue and a wall of sound is not for everyone, but if you love the genre you know exactly what we mean.

The MEO Arena is a familiar home for events like this: good acoustics, transport right outside at Oriente station, and the Parque das Nações area next door to grab a bite before doors open. If you are coming from out of town, it is one of the easiest venues to reach in Lisbon.

Before you go

As always, confirm the schedule and band list with the organisers before you leave — line-ups can change at the last minute, and nobody wants to arrive halfway through the headliner. And with the country in extreme heat, drink water and take it easy until you are inside.

If you are after more plans for the coming weeks, see our preview of NOS Alive and the Iron Maiden concert at Estádio da Luz. Tickets and information at MEO Arena.

While half of Europe hunts for the most expensive mega-festival, the Vale do Sousa is a reminder that the best party is often the one in the town next door. The Festas da Cidade de Rebordosa, in honour of São Miguel, have taken over this town in the Paredes municipality and run until Monday 6 July, with music, tradition and the obligatory dose of fireworks.

What’s on

The line-up mixes crowd-pleasing pop and folk with names that fill any street festival: Toy, Calema, MC IG, Danni Gato and the Gipsy Kings Family take the stage across the days. In between there are parades, brass bands, DJ sets, processions and the kind of street atmosphere only folk festivals have — the sort where you eat a bifana standing up and stay late just for the fireworks.

How to finish in style

Monday’s closing promises to be one of the busiest: a big motorcycle parade, drumming, samba schools, an electric-trio float with DJs and street entertainment until midnight, capped by the traditional pyromusical show. For families, it’s one of those programmes with something for every age.

Entry to the concerts is mostly free — bring good spirits, comfortable shoes and some patience for the traffic on the way out.

Douro & Porto Wine Festival

If any landscape calls for a glass of wine in hand, it’s the Douro. And it’s right there, at the Porto Comercial de Cambres in Peso da Régua, that the Douro & Porto Wine Festival returns on 3 and 4 July — billed as the Iberian Peninsula’s biggest wine festival, with the river and terraced vineyards as its backdrop.

What to expect

The formula brings together three national passions: wine, food and music. The Wine Village gathers dozens of producers from the Douro region and Port Wine for tastings, while the Chef’s Court brings several national chefs presenting gourmet dishes. In between, Portuguese and international artists liven up the two nights, which run from 6pm to 2am.

How to make the most of it

Set deep in the demarcated region, the festival is also the perfect excuse for a weekend escape. Lamego, Peso da Régua and Pinhão are a stone’s throw away and make an ideal base if you want to stretch the trip and visit the estates by daylight.

A practical tip: the Douro gets seriously hot in summer, so a hat, water and comfortable shoes are worth it for wandering between the stalls.

LISB-ON

Some festivals happen in stadiums and some prefer a clearing among the trees. LISB-ON is one of the latter, and it returns to Monsanto on 3 and 4 July to turn Lisbon’s largest park into an open-air dance floor.

The recipe is familiar and still works: electronic music from start to finish, without locking itself to a single style. House, techno, jazz and soul weave through the weekend, with international DJs passing through the various stages set up amid the greenery.

Dancing under the trees

LISB-ON’s real trump card is the setting. Instead of the concrete and dust of a traditional venue, there’s shade, grass and the cooler air of the city’s green lung — a rare luxury in the middle of a Lisbon July. It’s a festival built for spending the whole day, between a set and a break in the shade.

For anyone living in or passing through Lisbon this weekend, it’s a relaxed alternative to the big beach festivals that dominate the summer calendar. Less stadium crowd, more picnic-with-good-music atmosphere.

Before you go

It’s worth checking times and access on the official site, especially since Monsanto is large and getting there isn’t always obvious. Bringing water and comfortable shoes helps too — you’ll be on your feet all day, and dancing.

If you’re after a plan with a bit of style this week, the North has you covered. Portugal Fashion Experience kicks off on 1 July and runs through the 4th, spread across Porto, Matosinhos and — new this year — Ílhavo.

It’s more than a run of pretty catwalk shows. The programme blends fashion, industry, innovation and lifestyle, with presentations, a tour of textile production, the Portugal Fashion Summit, the BLOOM space for new designers and plenty of professional networking.

An industry-facing start

The first day has a deliberately industrial, strategic focus, with a visit to production in Paços de Ferreira open to press and guests. It’s a reminder that, behind the runways, there’s a textile sector employing thousands of people and standing among the strongest faces of Portuguese exports.

Across the four days, anyone keen on trends will have plenty to choose from, with established designers sharing the bill with emerging names. It’s the kind of event where you can catch next season’s collection and get a read on where Portuguese fashion is heading.

Worth a look

Even if you don’t live and breathe fashion, it’s a fine excuse to explore Porto’s creative scene on a summer weekend. And let’s be honest, seeing up close the work of the people who design what we’ll be wearing always has its charm.

The summer of festivals is not just Lisbon, and the North has a heavyweight card this year. MEO Marés Vivas returns from 17 to 19 July, now in Leça da Palmeira, Matosinhos, after years hugging the Gaia riverside. The change of home gives it fresh air and a lineup to match.

Who’s on stage

The bet is the blend that has always defined the festival: international pop, Latin rhythms and a heavy dose of Portuguese music. Through the grounds will pass names such as Seal, James, Myke Towers, Ozuna and Danny Ocean, alongside a Portuguese legion that includes Da Weasel, Plutónio, Dealema, Diogo Piçarra, Calema and Soraia Ramos. There is something for every taste and generation.

Worth going?

For anyone in greater Porto, it is one of the most complete summer cards without crossing the country. For those coming from afar, Matosinhos pays off: beach by day, concerts by night and the best sardines and seafood a few metres away. If you like a festival with the sea on the doorstep, this is the plan.

As always with these things, it is wise to lock in a ticket and a bed early, because July fills up fast on the coast.

If there’s one festival that puts the whole Ribatejo out on the street, this is it. From July 3 to 5, Vila Franca de Xira celebrates the 94th Colete Encarnado, its biggest festival, with three days devoted to the Tejo floodplains and the figure at the heart of it all: the campino, the region’s traditional herdsman.

If you’ve never seen it, here’s a taste. There are bulls in the streets and in the ring, campinos on horseback, bull runs, esperas and an encierro for the younger crowd. The bullfighting tradition drives the programme, but there’s something for every taste, with roving entertainment and gatherings winding through the town.

Music to close the night

The stages don’t disappoint. The line-up brings names like Camané, Toy, Fernando Daniel and D.A.M.A. — a blend of fado, popular music and pop that tends to keep the grounds packed into the small hours. It’s the kind of bill that brings whole families down into town.

The highlight

The most anticipated moment is the Homage to the Campino, which this year honours Francisco Honrado with the Pampilho de Honra. And on the 5th, the Palha Blanco ring hosts the traditional mixed bullfight. It’s worth checking times before you head out, because the programme is packed and the highlights spread across all three days.

A note for those who don’t care for the bullfighting side: the festival is large and offers plenty beyond the ring, from music to street entertainment. There’s room to pick what you want to see.

There are festivals, and then there is NOS Alive, which year after year confirms itself as one of Europe’s great summer gatherings. The 2026 edition returns to the Algés waterfront from 9 to 11 July, and the lineup has names for every taste.

Who is playing

Highlights include Twenty One Pilots, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Wolf Alice, Teddy Swims, Lorde, Pixies, Florence + The Machine and Portugal’s own Buraka Som Sistema. There is also a Heineken stage with Matt Berninger, Jehnny Beth and The War on Drugs — plenty to fill three days.

Prices and logistics

Day tickets are 84 euros, the two-day pass is 167 and the three-day pass is 199 euros. Algés has a good train link from Lisbon, which spares you the parking ordeal — take public transport and thank yourself at the end of the night.

A tip from someone who has been: bring a jacket, because the breeze off the Tejo bites after midnight, and arrive early for the acts you do not want to miss, as the stages fill up fast.

The most intense month of live music in Portugal kicks off. A quick guide to the big line-ups and how to enjoy them without spending a fortune.

Where
Various venues, Portugal
Organizer
Various promoters

If there is a month when Portugal buzzes to the sound of giant stages, it is July. The heat settles in, the nights stretch out and the country turns into a festival corridor from one end to the other. For live-music lovers, it is the best time of the year.

The headline act arrives in the first half of the month. NOS Alive returns to the Passeio Marítimo de Algés in Lisbon, from 9 to 11 July, with a line-up worthy of its reputation: Foo Fighters, Florence + The Machine and Twenty One Pilots up top, plus names like Lorde, Pixies and the very Portuguese energy of Buraka Som Sistema.

It is not only Lisbon

The temptation is to look only at the big names in the capital, but the map is far wider. Across the country there are mid-sized festivals, traditional town feasts and open-air concert series that are often cheaper and offer a more intimate experience. It is worth checking what is on in your region before assuming you must head to Lisbon.

Three practical tips to survive the marathon. First, buy tickets early, because prices only climb at the gate. Second, plan transport and the journey home, especially at the big venues. Third, hydrate and wear sunscreen, because the worst enemy of a summer festival is not the queue, it is the sun.

July is short for so much music. Choose well, sleep little and enjoy a lot.

Mark it down now: 5 September. That is the day Estádio do Restelo in Lisbon will host one of the biggest names in world music. Super Bock Super Rock changes its shape and becomes a major concert with The Weeknd as the headliner, joined by Playboi Carti.

For anyone who has followed pop and R&B in recent years, no introduction is needed. The Weeknd is one of those artists who fills stadiums anywhere on the planet, with a pile of hits everyone knows even without realising it.

A grand end of summer

Choosing the Restelo gives the show the scale of a major event, the kind that fills the city and packs out hotels, restaurants and transport. September has become a strong month for concerts in Portugal, taking advantage of the end of festival season and weather that is still generous.

Anyone wanting to go should keep an eye on the official box office and beware of resales at inflated prices, a classic whenever a name like this comes to town. It is also wise to plan the trip early, because nights like these tend to test the patience of those who leave everything to the last minute.

It is the kind of night that stays in the memory and gives people something to talk about for months. Lisbon, in September, looks promising.

While half the country argues over the best summer festival, a part of Portugal is celebrating the old-fashioned way. Vila Pouca de Aguiar holds its festivities in honour of São Pedro from 29 June to 5 July, and it is the kind of programme that brings together the village, the returning emigrant and the passing visitor.

The recipe is that of the good Trás-os-Montes festivals: masses and processions mark the religious side, and right after, the street party takes over. In between there is a horse race, the inevitable card tournament (sueca) and nights of music that stretch into the small hours.

More than a concert line-up

The charm of these festivities is not an international headliner but the atmosphere. It is the packed square, the smell of fairground food, the coloured lights and that sense of community the big wristband-and-fence venues rarely manage to reproduce. For anyone passing through the North this week, it is a stop worth making.

Entry is free and it is best to confirm times with the organisers, as the programmes for these festivals shift with the weather and tradition.
