Halloween with the kids? These plans run from Braga to the Algarve
A giant bouncy-castle weekend at Portimão Arena, a night-time mystery hunt at the Benfica Museum, a spooky reading with live music at Évora's Paço de São Miguel, story sessions in Coimbra, a library night in Braga and a party in Albufeira. Times, prices and booking.
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and the Sunday after it is 1 November, All Saints’ Day. That is a whole weekend for costumes, pumpkins and carefully managed frights. Here are six plans built for children, from the Minho down to the Algarve. Almost all of them need booking, so sort it this week.
Braga: a night at the library
The Biblioteca Lúcio Craveiro da Silva stays open late on the 31st, from 9pm to 11.30pm, for children aged 5 to 10. It costs €8 per person and you have to register in advance. Reading in the dark has never been so encouraged.
Coimbra: stories by age group
Coimbra’s children’s library splits its audience sensibly. On Friday 30th at 6pm there are Halloween stories for 3- to 5-year-olds. On Saturday 31st, same time, a second session for ages 6 and up. Both are free, but you need to book on 239 702 630 or by emailing biblioteca.infantil@cm-coimbra.pt. Sessions are in Portuguese.
Lisbon: monsters in the museum
The Benfica Museum (Cosme Damião) runs its third Os Monstros Saem à Noite, a mystery hunt through the museum, on the 31st at 9pm. A ticket for one child and one adult is €14, each extra child €6 and each extra adult €12. Places are limited and must be booked ahead.
Évora: a properly spooky story
At the Paço de São Miguel, Saturday night brings a dramatised reading with live music and projections, at 9pm. Booking is compulsory, on 266 748 350 or by emailing servicoeducativo@fea.pt.
Portimão: two days of bouncy castles
The longest option is the Fun Day Halloween at Portimão Arena, on 31 October and 1 November, 10am to 7pm. It is for children aged 2 to 15, with areas split by age, slides, trampolines and obstacle courses. A standard ticket is €19 in advance or €21 on the day, the Gold ticket €23 or €26, and up to two adults per child get in free. The details are on the Fun Day Halloween listing.
Albufeira: an afternoon party
Play Albufeira holds its Halloween Kids Party on the 31st in two sessions, 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 8pm, with games, crafts, trick-or-treating and trampolines. Costumes encouraged. It is €18.50 per person plus the booking fee, through the party’s official page.
If you would rather swap pumpkins for horses, the Golegã horse fair opens on 6 November, with roast chestnuts and São Martinho close behind.
