Diesel in Portugal jumps 13.5 cents on Monday — the biggest hike of the year

Fuel prices rise on 20 July in Portugal: diesel up 13.5 cents to nearly 1.99 euros a litre, petrol up 6.5 to around 1.98. Middle East escalation is to blame — and the fuel tax may be adjusted.

If you usually fill up on Mondays, this is the week to break the habit and go today. Simple diesel rises about 13.5 cents a litre in Portugal from 20 July and 95-octane petrol goes up 6.5 cents — the biggest weekly update of the year, according to forecasts advanced by the ACP motoring club from international quotations. On a 50-litre diesel tank, that is nearly seven euros more from one week to the next.

How much will diesel cost in Portugal from Monday?

A litre of simple diesel should average close to 1.99 euros, with 95 petrol at around 1.98 — national averages that include motorway stations, so low-cost pumps will charge less; you can track official daily averages on the DGEG fuel price portal. The cause is far from Portuguese forecourts: the escalating Middle East conflict has pushed Brent upwards again, with markets nervous about the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint for a fifth of the world’s oil — pressure we have been following in our markets tracker.

Will the government adjust the ISP fuel tax?

It says it might. The executive had already signalled that a rise in the order of ten cents would justify tweaking the ISP to soften the blow at the pump — and this week’s diesel update clears that threshold. No decision has been announced yet; if one comes, expect it within days.

In the meantime the maths is simple: filling up today costs less than tomorrow. And if the Gulf’s week looks anything like the last one, relief may take a while to find its way back to the pumps.
