Olivia Colman yells “Mr Bennet!” in the first trailer for Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice
Dolly Alderton’s six-part adaptation, directed by Euros Lyn, stars Emma Corrin as Lizzie and Jack Lowden as Darcy. It lands on Netflix on 3 December.
Netflix has put out the first proper trailer for its new Pride and Prejudice, and with it a date: all six episodes arrive on 3 December.
Emma Corrin, the young Diana in The Crown, plays Lizzie. Jack Lowden, River Cartwright in Slow Horses, takes on Darcy. Corrin is also an executive producer here, a first for them.
The Bennets, at full volume
The supporting cast is stacked. Olivia Colman is Mrs Bennet and Rufus Sewell is Mr Bennet, the father who tunes out the moment his five daughters start talking at once. Fiona Shaw plays Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Jamie Demetriou is a suitably awful Mr Collins, Daryl McCormack is Mr Bingley and Louis Partridge is Mr Wickham. The sisters are Freya Mavor (Jane), Hopey Parish (Mary), Hollie Avery (Kitty) and Rhea Norwood (Lydia).
The trailer sets the mood quickly. There is Mrs Bennet’s trademark shriek, a lot of overlapping chatter, Hertfordshire fields thick with wildflowers and the familiar will-they-won’t-they between Lizzie and Darcy. (They will. Act surprised.)
Who made it
Every episode was written by Dolly Alderton, author of Everything I Know About Love, and directed by Euros Lyn, whose credits include Heartstopper and Doctor Who. Lookout Point produces.
It lands three decades after the BBC’s 1995 serial, the one with Colin Firth and the lake, and more than 20 years after the Keira Knightley film. Comparisons are coming whether anyone likes it or not. If you need something to fill the evenings until then, Netflix has already dropped the third season of Nobody Wants This.
