Summer is for laughing: animation rules the box office again
With the Minions back and Super Mario passing two billion, animation proves once more that it fills theatres when the heat is on.
There’s a pattern that repeats every summer: when the thermometer spikes, families flee to the air conditioning of the cinema — and animation usually catches that ride. This July is no exception. The Minions are back and opened strong at the international box office in their first days, confirming the yellow formula is still unstoppable.
The animation empire
The clearest sign of the genre’s strength came from Super Mario, whose latest adventure helped the saga pass the two-billion-dollar revenue mark. That’s no small feat: these are films that cross languages and ages, the kind of product that fills a room on a Saturday afternoon with grandparents, parents and kids all at once.
Why it matters
At a time when many people would rather watch everything at home, animation remains one of the few things that make leaving for the cinema worth it — for the experience, the big screen, the ritual. For the industry, it’s a relief to know some genres are still couch-proof.
For the viewer, the message is simple: if you’re after a family plan in this heat, the cinema is full of colourful options.
