July at the movies: a live-action Moana and horror set ablaze
Disney launches a live-action Moana and Warner brings another Evil Dead. Summer at the cinema promises everything, from family adventure to pure scares.
If there’s a month when cinemas crank up the air conditioning, it’s July — and this year the offering has something for every taste and every age. On one side, big family adventure; on the other, horror that makes you jump out of your seat. It’s a summer of classic blockbusters, unapologetically.
Moana in the flesh
Disney’s big bet is the live-action version of Moana, a decade after the animation won over half the world. Dwayne Johnson slips back into the skin of Maui, the tattooed demigod, in a return to the Pacific that Disney hopes to turn into another hit from its classic-remake machine. For families, it’s the right plan for a hot afternoon.
Horror wants its place too
At the opposite end of the spectrum sits Evil Dead Burn, a new chapter in one of the most resilient horror sagas ever. The formula holds: a family reunion, an ancient evil and plenty of blood in between. After the strong run the genre has enjoyed, Warner is betting there’s always an audience for a good scare in a packed room.
In between, the summer of 2026 has already flexed: the Super Mario saga passed the two-billion-dollar mark with its new film, proof that animation still rules the box office.
