Real heat is coming: yellow warnings from Saturday, up to 42C
IPMA has put inland districts on yellow alert, with the peak landing Tuesday and Wednesday. But relax — the '50C' doing the rounds online is nonsense.
Dig out the sunscreen and fill the water bottle: IPMA says temperatures start climbing this Saturday, with thermometers potentially hitting 42C inland. Interior districts go on yellow alert from 9am Saturday, and the peak of the heat should land on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
Along the western coast it’s milder, around 30C, but in the Alentejo and inland it pushes well past 40. And it’s not just daytime: nights warm up too, with much of the country above 20C in the small hours — which makes sleeping a chore.
And that 50C thing?
Forget it. IPMA has already stepped in to knock down the social-media rumours of 50C. The forecast values, it says, are well short of the mainland’s records, which sit around 46 or 47C. Serious heat, yes; apocalypse, no.
The basics
Drink water even when you’re not thirsty, dodge the sun between noon and 5pm, and keep an eye on the elderly, babies and anyone working outdoors. And with everything this dry, take extra care with any spark — fire season doesn’t forgive carelessness.
