Good news at the pump: fuel prices drop on Monday
Diesel should fall more than ten cents and petrol about six from June 22. Why — and the ISP tax tweak that eats into part of the relief.
If you’ve got a trip planned this week, it might pay to wait until Monday. From June 22, regular diesel is expected to fall more than ten cents a litre and regular petrol about six. On a 50-litre tank, that’s close to five euros saved — not a fortune, but enough for a few coffees with change to spare.
The reason sits out in the international markets. Oil eased after the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding, with Brent slipping back towards $77 a barrel. Less tension in the Gulf, fewer jitters in the barrel, lower cost at the pump.
The ISP catch
There’s one detail worth grasping. The government decided to adjust its extraordinary discount on the fuel tax (ISP) precisely because prices were heading down. Translation: part of the relief coming from cheaper oil gets clawed back as tax. The drop is real, but it would be bigger without this tweak.
Practical tip for Portugal: if your needle isn’t on empty, hold off filling up until Monday. And it always pays to compare stations — the gap between forecourts is often wider than this whole price cut.
