The week ahead: labour law, the World Cup and the Santos Populares
Three things will shape Portugal this week — the labour reform hitting Parliament, the national team's World Cup opener, and São João bonfires. Here's the quick guide.
Monday, coffee in hand, and it’s already clear this won’t be a quiet week. There are three things to watch — one serious, one festive, and one that’s a bit of both.
Parliament and the labour law
The big political fight is the government’s labour reform, the so-called “Trabalho XXI.” It touches more than a hundred articles of the Labour Code and already triggered a general strike on 3 June. With no guaranteed majority, the government will have to bargain for votes — and every concession will make headlines. This is the one to keep an eye on.
The national team kicks off
On Wednesday Portugal’s World Cup begins: the opener against DR Congo in Houston, early afternoon US time (early evening here). It’s the start of a campaign plenty of people quietly suspect is one generation’s last great dance. Cafés and clubs are already lining up the big screens.
And the bonfires
Finally, the fun part: the Santos Populares arrive. São João is the 24th, with the marches parading on the night of the 23rd, and São Pedro right after. Sardines, basil pots and street parties — tradition never misses. Have a good week.
