Slavko Vinčić gets the World Cup 2026 final — and Argentina remember him too well
FIFA has confirmed Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić for the World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. He refereed the 2024 Champions League final — and Argentina's shock loss to Saudi Arabia in 2022.
The whistle for the biggest game of the next four years has an owner. FIFA has confirmed Slovenia’s Slavko Vinčić, 46, as the referee for the World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain, Sunday at 8pm Lisbon time at MetLife Stadium. He’ll have serious company: Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic on the lines and Jordan’s Adham Makhadmeh as fourth official.
Who is Slavko Vinčić, the World Cup 2026 final referee?
One of Europe’s most experienced officials. An international since 2010, he took charge of the 2024 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, and he arrives at this final after three tidy outings in the tournament — Brazil vs Morocco (1-1), Algeria vs Jordan and Mexico vs Ecuador. A gala CV for a game with zero room for rehearsal.
Why do Argentina remember Vinčić?
Because he refereed the strangest day of the Messi era: Argentina’s shock 1-2 defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening match in Qatar, 2022. The albiceleste went on to win that World Cup anyway, so perhaps the memory is a lucky charm — but nobody in Buenos Aires has forgotten the afternoon everything went sideways.
The appointment lands days after Deschamps left the tournament questioning the standard of refereeing in the semi-finals. FIFA’s answer was to hand the final to a Champions League final referee — the official appointment list is on FIFA’s site.
Sunday, 8pm in Lisbon, the whistle is his. The rest, with any luck, belongs to the players.
