Tekever buys Cloudsweep: the drone unicorn doubles down on AI

Tekever, Portugal’s drone unicorn, has bought Cloudsweep, a homegrown artificial intelligence startup, to speed up the software behind its defence and security systems. The deal’s value was not disclosed, but the logic is clear: rather than wait for AI talent, Tekever went and bought it.
What is Cloudsweep?
It is a Portuguese startup focused on applying artificial intelligence to software development, meaning it uses AI to write and improve code faster. That is exactly the skill an autonomous-systems company needs when it wants its drones to fly with more autonomy and make decisions without relying on GPS. The acquisition fits an internal shift already under way, with AI becoming a native part of Tekever’s engineering processes.
Why did Tekever buy an AI startup?
To stay in the AI race and to keep talent in Portugal. The company, which already has more than 1,300 employees and operations in Portugal, the UK, France, Estonia, Ukraine and the United States, wants to strengthen what it calls critical capabilities for Europe in defence, security and monitoring. Buying a ready-made team is faster than recruiting one piece by piece, especially in a European market where firms complain of talent draining to the United States.
It is another sign that Portugal’s startup ecosystem is building muscle, and that AI is now the battleground. The government itself has been trying to respond with fast-tracked visas to attract AI specialists. More on the company at Tekever’s official site.
