Moscow woke up to an explosion in a restaurant — three dead and 21 injured

An improvised explosive device killed three people and injured 21 in a restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square in Moscow. Russian authorities have not officially identified the woman who was carrying the device.

Three people were killed and 21 injured when an explosion tore through a restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square in Moscow. Russian authorities say the blast came from an improvised explosive device, carried by a woman who has not yet been officially identified.

The square is one of the city’s landmarks — dominated by one of the seven Stalinist towers Moscow built after the war, with restaurants and offices at street level and traffic moving through it all day. An explosion there, in the middle of the day, is not something anybody misses.

What do we know about the Moscow explosion?

The essentials, and not a great deal more: an improvised device, a busy restaurant, three dead, 21 injured. Images circulating on social media show the damage to the exterior of the premises. The investigation is ongoing, and so far no group has been named and there is no official confirmation of whether the woman carrying the device did so knowingly.

Why is the identification taking so long?

It usually does in cases like this. A close-range detonation makes immediate identification difficult, and Russian official communication tends to come out slowly and in pieces after incidents of this kind — casualty numbers first, the origin of the device next, and the wider context much later, if at all. Early versions are worth treating carefully.

The backdrop explains the nerves. Moscow has seen security incidents regularly since the war in Ukraine began, and the city has already been hit by drone attacks that forced airports to shut. This one is different in kind: not a strike from a distance, but a device walked into a public room. Travel advice for Russia is published on the Portuguese Foreign Ministry’s portal.

Three deaths over lunch is not a war statistic. It is the war turning up somewhere nobody was expecting it.

Two tonnes of cocaine washed up on the Comporta coast, and nobody has been arrested

Portugal's Maritime Police recovered 2,100 kilos of cocaine along the Alentejo coast south of Tróia, along with fuel canisters. There are no arrests and the case has gone to the judicial police.

Portugal's burnt area in 2026 has passed 30,000 hectares — the third worst since 2016

ICNF's tally to July 15 puts 2026 at 30,690 hectares burnt across 4,975 rural fires. Viseu takes the biggest share, Porto logs the most ignitions, and burnt area is up 67% on the ten-year average.

Uganda is handing out emergency food in Karamoja after 19 people died of hunger

Uganda's government is delivering 9.4 million kilos of maize flour and beans to nearly 314,000 households in Karamoja, the region a failed rainy season left without a harvest.
