Horses, wine and a film festival turning 20: what's on across Portugal, 6-8 November
Four ways to spend the first St Martin's weekend: the 50th National Horse Fair opens in Golegã, Arruda dos Vinhos gathers 13 local wineries at its free wine festival, LEFFEST turns 20 with four opening films on one night, and Portimão opens its 363rd St Martin's Fair.
The first weekend of November that smells of roast chestnuts comes with four good reasons to get out of the house, from the Ribatejo down to the Algarve. Two are fairs with centuries behind them, one is a free wine festival, and the fourth is a film festival hitting 20.
Golegã: the horse fair’s 50th edition
Golegã opens the 50th National Horse Fair on Friday 6 November, renamed this year as the Caixa Golegã Feira Nacional do Cavalo. It runs alongside the 27th International Lusitano Horse Fair and the St Martin’s Fair until 15 November.
This weekend is the warm-up rather than the peak: the procession of the romeiros, the riders who arrive on horseback, doesn’t set off until the 11th, St Martin’s Day. But if you want Lusitanos in the arena and a square full of wide-brimmed hats without the holiday crush, this is a good time to go. We’ve covered the dates and history of the Golegã fair, and the programme is filling in on the fair’s official site.
Arruda dos Vinhos: 13 wineries, free entry
North of Lisbon in the Oeste, Arruda dos Vinhos is holding its 29th Vine and Wine Festival at the Pavilhão Multiusos until Sunday. Thirteen producers from the municipality are pouring, from the local cooperative to estates such as Quinta de S. Sebastião and Quinta da Marinheira, with guided tastings and cooking demos. Entry is free every day.
Sons do Minho play on Friday night. Saturday crowns the 2026 Vine and Wine Ambassador. Sunday afternoon belongs to the kids, with face painting, a cooking demo and Palhaço Sorriso the clown. There are five places to eat on site, and if you’d rather sit down properly, restaurants around town are serving dishes made with wine, grapes or raisins all month.
Lisbon: LEFFEST opens in four cinemas at once
The Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival turns 20 and starts on Friday with an unusual night: four opening films, one per venue. James Gray’s “Paper Tiger” at the São Jorge, Martin McDonagh’s “Wild Horse Nine” at Culturgest, Cristian Mungiu’s “Fjord” at NOS Vasco da Gama and Lee Chang-dong’s “Possible Love” at the Nimas.
David Cronenberg heads the jury and the festival runs to 15 November. Times and tickets are in our LEFFEST preview, venue by venue.
Portimão: the town’s oldest fair
If you’re in the Algarve, the 363rd St Martin’s Fair opens at 4pm on Friday at Portimão’s Parque de Feiras e Exposições and stays open until 1am. Saturday it runs from 10am to 1am, Sunday from 10am to midnight. Free entry, fairground rides, farturas, chestnuts and grilled octopus, as tradition demands, until 15 November.
One practical note if you’re driving: November is the rainy month, and Golegã and Portimão are largely open-air fairs. Before you set off, check the IPMA forecast for the district you’re heading to.
