Lanterns lands on HBO Max on 16 August and the full trailer is already out

Lanterns arrives on 16 August with eight weekly episodes, Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as two intergalactic cops and Damon Lindelof among its creators. Everything known so far.

The full trailer dropped this week and settled the one remaining question: Lanterns is not a superhero show with capes and explosions. It is a crime drama. With green rings, but a crime drama.

When does Lanterns premiere?

On 16 August, a Sunday, on HBO and streaming on HBO Max. Eight episodes, released weekly, because HBO remains stubborn about not dumping a whole season at once, which by now is practically a house signature.

What is Lanterns about?

Two intergalactic cops stuck inside a very earthbound crime. Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, the recruit. Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, the worn-out legend who has seen it all. The pair end up investigating a murder in the American heartland, and that is where the show settles in: fewer galaxies, more back roads, motels and people who dislike questions.

It was created by Damon Lindelof with Chris Mundy and Tom King. Lindelof is the name behind Lost and Watchmen, and the second of those is the reference that matters, because that is where he proved you can take a comic book and make something adult, strange and serious out of it. The cast also includes Laura Linney, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Nathan Fillion and Jasmine Cephas Jones, which is not the sort of list you assemble for a summer filler.

Is it worth waiting for?

Depends what you came for. Anyone wanting the usual noise of the genre will find this slow. Anyone who loved Watchmen and is tired of shared universes explaining themselves to each other for two hours has probably just found the show of the summer.
