Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested in Miami after British authorities announced new rape and sex trafficking charges against the brothers. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service revealed 38 new charges on Saturday, bringing the total to 59, relating to seven victims over a period spanning 2010 to 2017. Case details are published by the CPS.

Who are the Tate brothers?

Andrew Tate, a former kickboxer, became one of the most recognisable — and most banned — faces of the so-called manosphere, the online community of radical masculinity, with millions of followers across platforms. Dual British-US citizens, the brothers had been living in Romania, where prosecutors indicted them in 2023 on charges including rape and human trafficking. Early last year their travel restrictions there were lifted — and they relocated to the United States.

What happens next?

An arrest on American soil opens the door to extradition proceedings to the UK, where the 59 charges await. The prosecutor leading the case was pointed about the message: there is no place for male violence against women and girls, and every report will be investigated. The brothers have always denied the accusations against them, and the presumption of innocence stands until trial.

The Tates’ fall caps a turbulent stretch of British news — the country swore in a new prime minister on Monday — and the story is only beginning: between courtrooms, extradition hearings and the inevitable online storm, this one will run for months.
