Kendrick Lamar leads the 2026 VMA nominations with 10, and the show lands on 27 September

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards nominations are out: Kendrick Lamar leads with 10, ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter follow on eight, and the ceremony airs 27 September from Los Angeles.

The VMA nominations are out and there was never much mystery about who would top them. Kendrick Lamar picked up 10, including the three everyone checks first — Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.

Just behind him sits a nicely odd tie: ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter, eight nominations apiece, two completely different career routes arriving at the same number. Ariana Grande and The Weeknd take seven each.

Who is nominated for Best Pop Artist at the 2026 VMAs?

Best Pop Artist puts Doechii, Tate McRae and Charli xcx on the same shortlist, among others — which tells you how far the word “pop” has been stretched lately. Charli xcx arrives there off the back of a year in which she put out a record with Scorsese on the cover, the kind of move that does half a campaign’s work on its own.

When and where are the 2026 VMAs?

The ceremony is on Sunday 27 September, live from Los Angeles, and this year it simulcasts on CBS as well as MTV. That is the formula MTV has reached for to put the show in front of a far bigger audience than the channel could deliver alone — and, in practice, to win back some of the cultural weight televised music awards have been shedding for years.

Worth remembering: most of the major VMA categories are voted on by the public, which makes them less a verdict on quality than a snapshot of who can mobilise a fanbase. The two aren’t mutually exclusive, but it does explain the occasional result that leaves critics squinting. The full category list is up on the official VMAs site.

Venice 2026 has named the 20 films chasing the Golden Lion, and Werner Herzog is back in the race

The 83rd Venice Film Festival unveiled its official selection: 20 films competing for the Golden Lion from 2 to 12 September, with Herzog, Kore-eda, McDonagh and Moretti in the running.

Twenty films are going for the Golden Lion this year. The 83rd Venice Film Festival has revealed its official selection, and as usual the list tells you as much about the state of auteur cinema as any year-end round-up. The festival runs 2 to 12 September on the Lido and opens with "Ink", Danny Boyle's film about the rise of Rupert Murdoch — which doesn't just open the festival, it competes too. The film already made headlines before anyone had seen it,…

Ryan Gosling is the new Ghost Rider, and Marvel saved that one for the Comic-Con panel

Marvel announced at Comic-Con 2026 that Ryan Gosling will play Ghost Rider, directed by Shawn Levy and arriving in 2028. Black Panther III also got its news.

Some announcements get saved for last, and Marvel saved this one. On the Hall H stage in San Diego, Kevin Feige confirmed a new Ghost Rider film is coming and that the man wearing the suit, or in this case the flaming skull, is Ryan Gosling. In 2028, with Shawn Levy directing. There is a nice story behind it too: Gosling said it is a character he has wanted to play for a very long time, and Levy told the crowd the pair spent much of their downtime on Star…

Charli XCX's new album is out and Scorsese is on the cover

Music, Fashion, Film landed on 24 July with John Cale, Marc Jacobs and Martin Scorsese on the sleeve and a sound built on processed guitars. The tour starts in September.

It has landed. Music, Fashion, Film, Charli XCX's eighth studio album, came out on 24 July through Atlantic Records, and the cover is a statement before you hear a note. Three names, one for each word of the title: John Cale for music, Marc Jacobs for fashion, Martin Scorsese for film. It is the sort of gesture that only works when an artist has enough standing to pull it off without looking silly, and after the cultural event that was her last record,…

Jennie dropped 'Less Than a Lover' and shot the whole video in Girona

Jennie is back with 'Less Than a Lover', her first solo song of 2026, written and directed by her and filmed in the streets of Girona, Spain.

Jennie is back, and she took her time about it. 'Less Than a Lover' arrived on Friday and it is her first new song of 2026 — warm acoustic guitar, vintage electric keys and a tempo that seems built for eleven o'clock on an August night. That awkward stretch between friendship and a relationship. The song parks itself right there, in the uncertainty of two people who are already more than friends but have not said so out loud, and it handles the subject…

Lanterns lands on HBO Max on 16 August and the full trailer is already out

Lanterns arrives on 16 August with eight weekly episodes, Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as two intergalactic cops and Damon Lindelof among its creators. Everything known so far.

The full trailer dropped this week and settled the one remaining question: Lanterns is not a superhero show with capes and explosions. It is a crime drama. With green rings, but a crime drama. On 16 August, a Sunday, on HBO and streaming on HBO Max. Eight episodes, released weekly, because HBO remains stubborn about not dumping a whole season at once, which by now is practically a house signature. Two intergalactic cops stuck inside a very earthbound…

Luís Represas has died at 69, and Portugal lost a voice half the country can sing by heart

The Trovante founder and solo singer died on 22 July after a long illness. He was marking 50 years in music and had 2027 concerts booked.

Some voices need no introduction. Three seconds of radio and you know exactly who is singing. Luís Represas had one of those voices, and he died on Wednesday 22 July, aged 69, after a long illness. Because he was in the right place while Portuguese music was working out what it wanted to be. He founded Trovante in the mid-1970s and became the face and the voice of a band that took protest song, close vocal harmony and folk and turned all of it into…

It's set for September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5. If you just want the soundtrack, it lands even sooner, on August 28, composed by Emmy winner David Fleming. In other words: it's a little over six weeks until the claws come out. The moment…

The headline is the return — and the farewell — of Outer Banks, whose fifth and final season lands on 20 August. For fans of the Pogues, it is the close of a treasure-hunt saga that became a…

The Odyssey is packing Portuguese cinemas — and nobody agrees on Nolan's epic yet

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey opened in Portugal with sold-out IMAX screenings and critics split between masterpiece and letdown.

The Odyssey finally landed in Portuguese cinemas on Thursday and did what only a Christopher Nolan film can do in the middle of July: fill theatres, sell out IMAX screenings booked months in advance, and get everyone arguing — not about whether it's good, but about exactly how good (or not) it is. The Oppenheimer director took Homer's poem and turned it into a three-hour epic with Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope and a cast list that…
