Portuguese cinema lands on HBO Max this August, from Mau Mau Maria to 1618

Several Portuguese feature films join the HBO Max catalogue in August 2026, including Mau Mau Maria, O Amor é Lindo… Porque Sim! and the historical drama 1618.

Portuguese films in an international catalogue are usually the pleasant exception announced once a year. In August, HBO Max opens the door to several at once: the comedy Mau Mau Maria, the Lisbon romance O Amor é Lindo… Porque Sim!, and the historical drama 1618, a co-production set during the Inquisition in Portugal.

This deserves more attention than it tends to get. The average Portuguese film gets two or three weeks in cinemas, lives on the festival circuit, and then vanishes into a limbo where it only exists if somebody thinks to go looking. Landing in a streaming catalogue with international distribution is the difference between having had a release and continuing to exist.

Which Portuguese films are joining HBO Max this month?

Three titles in completely different registers, which is itself a good sign — this is not a themed bundle, it is proper catalogue. Mau Mau Maria plays broad comedy. O Amor é Lindo… Porque Sim! is urban romance with Lisbon playing itself. And 1618 is the most ambitious of the set: a historical drama about the Inquisition, a period Portuguese cinema rarely touches and almost never head-on.

What else is on the August slate?

Two big releases are doing the subscription-pulling: George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and the series Lanterns, arriving on 16 August with Hal Jordan and John Stewart at the centre of an investigation set on Earth. Anyone who would rather finish stories than start them has Netflix closing out One Hundred Years of Solitude and saying goodbye to the Pogues across the same month.

The full catalogue and release dates are on the official HBO Max site.

If the algorithm puts a Portuguese film in front of you this August, give it the first ten minutes. That is roughly how an audience gets built.

Netflix wraps One Hundred Years of Solitude in August and says goodbye to the Pogues

Part 2 of One Hundred Years of Solitude arrives 5 August with seven episodes and a special finale on the 26th. Outer Banks' final season drops on the 20th.

August is usually the dead month in streaming, the one where platforms assume everyone is at the beach. Netflix has gone the other way this year and is closing out two big stories at once. On 5 August, with seven episodes. And there is an unusual wrinkle: the adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's novel does not end there. The conclusion comes as a separate, standalone chapter running close to feature length, landing in the catalogue on 26 August. It is a…

Ariana Grande's petal is out, and there is not one guest feature on it

Ariana Grande's eighth studio album landed on 31 July: 12 tracks, all lowercase, no features, with Ilya Salmanzadeh on executive production.

One decision on petal says more than any lyric: there is not a single guest on the record. In an era when most pop albums read like a contacts list, Ariana Grande spends all 12 tracks alone at the microphone. It is Grande's eighth studio album, released on 31 July through her own imprint, BabyDoll Music, with Republic Records. Twelve tracks, every title styled in lowercase, recorded between January and April of this year. She co-wrote and…

It opened on 30 July, it is called Homem-Aranha: Um Novo Dia on Portuguese listings, and it is the reason cinemas here will be full for the first weekend of August. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is showing from Braga to Faro. Tom Holland is back in the suit, with Zendaya returning as Michelle Jones and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds — the trio that has carried this version of Peter Parker since 2017. Glen Hansard has died at 56 after a motorcycle crash in Dublin

The Irish musician who won an Oscar for Falling Slowly, from the film Once, died on July 29 in a motorcycle accident in Dublin. He was 56, and he started out busking.

Some voices you recognise by the third note. Glen Hansard's was one of them — cracked, always a fraction away from breaking, and for exactly that reason able to fill a whole room with one guitar. The Irish musician died on July 29 in a motorcycle crash in Dublin. He was 56. First of all, a Dublin kid who left school at 13 to go and busk. Out of that street came The Frames, the band he founded in the 1980s that became something close to a national…

The Globos de Ouro 2026 nominees are out, and the gala lands on 26 September

SIC has revealed the nominees for the 30th Globos de Ouro. Seventeen awards across seven areas, a gala on 26 September at Coliseu dos Recreios, and three Rabo de Peixe actors in one category.

The nominees landed on Wednesday night and the list holds fewer shocks than usual — which, at the Globos de Ouro, almost counts as news in itself. Portugal's biggest entertainment awards turn 30 this year, hand out 17 statuettes across seven areas, and take over the Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon on 26 September. In fiction, Rabo de Peixe dominates again: Afonso Pimentel, José Condessa and Rodrigo Tomás all compete for Best Actor, and the show is up for…

Are Ronaldo and Georgina getting married in Sintra on Saturday? Here is what is actually confirmed

Reports point to a Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez wedding on 1 August at Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra. The couple have confirmed nothing and sources have denied the date.

Start with what is genuinely known: neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Georgina Rodríguez has confirmed a date or a venue for the wedding. Everything else doing the rounds this week is rumour of varying confidence — and it is worth pulling the threads apart before anyone books a trip to Sintra. The TVI programme V+Fama says it received an invitation pointing to Saturday 1 August, at five in the afternoon, at Quinta da Regaleira. As staging goes, the choice…

Little Miss Twain is Shania Twain's seventh studio album, released on 24 July 2026 through Republic Records, featuring Tanya Tucker, Josh Homme and The War and Treaty.

Some artists come back to repeat the formula. Others come back to see what is still worth breaking. Venice 2026 has named the 20 films chasing the Golden Lion, and Werner Herzog is back in the race

The 83rd Venice Film Festival unveiled its official selection: 20 films competing for the Golden Lion from 2 to 12 September, with Herzog, Kore-eda, McDonagh and Moretti in the running.

Twenty films are going for the Golden Lion this year. The 83rd Venice Film Festival has revealed its official selection, and as usual the list tells you as much about the state of auteur cinema as any year-end round-up. The festival runs 2 to 12 September on the Lido and opens with "Ink", Danny Boyle's film about the rise of Rupert Murdoch — which doesn't just open the festival, it competes too. The film already made headlines before anyone had seen it,…

Kendrick Lamar leads the 2026 VMA nominations with 10, and the show lands on 27 September

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards nominations are out: Kendrick Lamar leads with 10, ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter follow on eight, and the ceremony airs 27 September from Los Angeles.

The VMA nominations are out and there was never much mystery about who would top them. Kendrick Lamar picked up 10, including the three everyone checks first — Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Album of the Year. Just behind him sits a nicely odd tie: ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter, eight nominations apiece, two completely different career routes arriving at the same number. Ariana Grande and The Weeknd take seven each. Best Pop Artist puts Doechii,…

Ryan Gosling is the new Ghost Rider, and Marvel saved that one for the Comic-Con panel

Marvel announced at Comic-Con 2026 that Ryan Gosling will play Ghost Rider, directed by Shawn Levy and arriving in 2028. Black Panther III also got its news.

Jennie dropped 'Less Than a Lover' and shot the whole video in Girona

Jennie is back with 'Less Than a Lover', her first solo song of 2026, written and directed by her and filmed in the streets of Girona, Spain.

Jennie is back, and she took her time about it. 'Less Than a Lover' arrived on Friday and it is her first new song of 2026 — warm acoustic guitar, vintage electric keys and a tempo that seems built for eleven o'clock on an August night. That awkward stretch between friendship and a relationship. The song parks itself right there, in the uncertainty of two people who are already more than friends but have not said so out loud, and it handles the subject…

Lanterns lands on HBO Max on 16 August and the full trailer is already out

Lanterns arrives on 16 August with eight weekly episodes, Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as two intergalactic cops and Damon Lindelof among its creators. Everything known so far.

The full trailer dropped this week and settled the one remaining question: Lanterns is not a superhero show with capes and explosions. It is a crime drama. With green rings, but a crime drama. On 16 August, a Sunday, on HBO and streaming on HBO Max. Eight episodes, released weekly, because HBO remains stubborn about not dumping a whole season at once, which by now is practically a house signature. Two intergalactic cops stuck inside a very earthbound…
