Heidi Klum turned up to her 25th Halloween party as her own severed hand
At the New York party she has hosted for a quarter of a century, the model appeared as a giant replica of her left hand, with long red nails, a thumb ring, her engagement ring and her wedding band. Only her eyes and mouth showed. Getting into it took five to six hours.
For weeks Heidi Klum had been dropping hints: a costume that was “very, very bloody” and would go “very well with red wine”. On Saturday night, at the 25th edition of the Halloween party she has thrown for a quarter of a century, it made sense. She came as a hand. Her own left hand, blown up to giant size and freshly severed.
The detail was obsessive. Long red nails, a ring on the thumb, her engagement ring and her wedding band. Only her eyes and mouth were visible, with blood running from the mouth, and she was flanked by helpers in blood-spattered hazmat suits. The party was at Cathédrale, the restaurant at the Moxy East Village hotel in New York, and the pictures went up on Heidi Klum’s Instagram.
Five to six hours to get in
Getting into the costume took five to six hours, she said, and building it took far longer. That is par for the course. Klum works with prosthetics that, as she explained before the party, have to come off afterwards with something that is “basically like nail polish remover on the face”.
Her husband, Tokio Hotel guitarist Tom Kaulitz, was away on tour and missed the party. He was still in the outfit, though: the giant ring finger carries a tattoo of his name. “A little bit of Tom is with me,” Klum said.
A hard act to follow
Plenty of people now wait for Klum’s costume the way they wait for a premiere. Last year she was Medusa, painted green with moving snakes on her head. In 2022 she arrived inside a giant worm, dangling from a fishing line. Along the way she has been a peacock, an eight-foot Transformer, the werewolf from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video and the goddess Kali, and once turned up with a crowd of Klum lookalikes.
Dressing as a piece of herself is a first. And if you spent Halloween on the sofa instead, the weekend had something for you too: the It: Welcome to Derry Halloween special.
