Up to €50,000 for art in Portugal's quieter corners (applications close 6 November)
The second round of DGARTES's Arte e Coesão Territorial programme has €1 million for projects worth €25,000 to €50,000, to run in 2027 and 2028 in 78 municipalities with little professional arts activity. Visual, performing, street, traditional and digital arts all qualify. Deadline 6 November.
Apply / Learn moreIf you are an artist, a collective or a cultural organisation with a project designed for somewhere beyond Lisbon and Porto, you have twelve days to get it on paper. Portugal’s arts agency DGARTES has opened the second round of its Arte e Coesão Territorial partnership programme, worth €1 million in total, and applications close on 6 November, as the government’s announcement of the new round confirms.
How much
Each project gets between €25,000 and €50,000. Run the numbers at either end and the pot covers somewhere between 20 and 40 projects, depending on size. The first round spent the same €1 million on 34 projects in 30 municipalities.
The work happens in 2027 and 2028, which leaves room to build something with a community rather than turn up, perform and leave.
Where
This is the filter that defines the scheme. Funding is limited to 78 municipalities where professional arts activity is thinnest on the ground, picked out by the Portuguese Observatory of Cultural Activities (OPAC) while updating the country’s Artistic and Cultural Atlas.
Before you write a word of your application, check the council you want to work in is on that list. The call notice and full rules sit on the Directorate-General for the Arts website, and if in doubt, ask DGARTES directly.
What kind of art
The net is wide: visual arts, performing arts, street arts, traditional arts and crafts, and digital arts. A theatre festival in a small town fits. So does an artist residency, a project with local craftspeople or a digital installation in an old town centre.
Culture minister Margarida Balseiro Lopes frames the renewal as a bet on culture as a driver of cohesion, backing projects that bring together communities, artists and craftspeople.
Before you submit
Have three things ready: your target municipality (and proof it qualifies), a budget that sits between €25,000 and €50,000, and a timeline that fits 2027 and 2028. Everything else is in the call notice.
If your organisation needs people as well as funding, the IEFP is running the second round of its +Talento and Iniciar internships until 7 December, with most of the intern’s pay covered by the state.
