Madeira businesses can claw back up to 90% of last year's freight bill
Madeira 2030 notice M2030-2026-35 refunds the cost of shipping goods for companies that produce or process them on the island: 90% of the spend (80% in the Free Trade Zone), up to €750,000 each, as a non-repayable grant. The pot is €5.695 million and applications close on 20 November at 5pm.
Apply / Learn moreMaking things on an island costs more, and freight is where it hurts most. Madeira 2030 has opened a scheme that hands some of it back: companies that produce or process goods in the region can recover up to 90% of what they spent shipping goods in 2025, as a grant that never has to be repaid.
The money is EU regional funding (FEDER), and the notice, M2030-2026-35, carries €5.695 million. Applications opened on 19 October and close on 20 November at 5pm, through the Balcão dos Fundos portal. The managing authority can close it early with five working days’ notice, so the final week is a gamble.
Who can apply
Micro, small, medium and large companies that produce or process goods in Madeira, keep organised accounts and have been trading for at least 24 months when they apply. State-owned companies are out.
What counts
One thing only: the cost of moving goods. That covers the trip from Madeira to anywhere within Portugal and, for materials brought in to be processed on the island, the journey there from wherever they came from. The reference year is 2025, although those invoices can have been paid in 2026.
Three exclusions are worth knowing before you start gathering paperwork. Freight already supported through POSEI does not count twice, purchases from related parties are out, and each application needs at least €7,500 of eligible spending.
How much you get
The base rate is 90%, or 80% for firms licensed in the Madeira Free Trade Zone, capped at €750,000 per company. The total operating aid any beneficiary receives in a year is also limited to the most favourable of three ceilings: 35% of gross value added, 40% of staff costs or 30% of the previous year’s turnover.
The catch
You have to keep the headcount you had in the month before you applied for three years (five for large companies). A drop shows up when the payment claim is checked, and it counts against the grant.
It is not the only business call open on the Balcão dos Fundos, but it is one of very few built around a cost that exists only because of the sea. On the mainland, the nearest thing for innovators was the €182.5 million Productive Innovation call, which closed in September.
