Michael Jackson biopic becomes the highest-grossing ever
Antoine Fuqua's film Michael has overtaken every other biopic at the global box office. The numbers and the controversy around the film.
Some names keep filling cinemas decades on. Michael Jackson is one of them. The film Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua, has become the highest-grossing biopic ever at the global box office, with takings of around $977 million, overtaking marks that looked untouchable.
To put it in perspective, the film left behind titles like Bohemian Rhapsody and even beat the global haul of Oppenheimer. For a musical biopic, it is a monumental achievement, and it confirms that the fascination with the King of Pop has not faded.
Box-office triumph, heated debate
Not everything is applause. The film has been criticised for what, according to several commentators, it chooses not to show, in a portrait many consider too careful with the more controversial corners of the artist’s life. The discussion about how to tell the stories of complex figures is very much alive.
Commercially, though, the strategy worked. Nostalgia, a soundtrack stuffed with hits and public curiosity did the rest. Whole families went back to the cinema to relive classics that span generations.
Whether this record lasts is another matter, at a time when musical biopics are multiplying. For now, Michael reigns at the box office, just as its subject reigned on the charts.
